4x4 Service

I finally got around to putting my truck into 4x4 after a good snow fall here in mn.

 

After doing that I noticed a rubbing noise coming from the front of the truck. It gets worse the higher the speed or if I'm turning. And also seems to go away when I stop pushing on the gas pedal.

 

 

Any suggestions on things to look at first?

It's not a "whirring" sound or metallic sounding noise is it? I would probably check the fluid level in the front diff just as a starting point.

change your front diff and tcase fluids and see if it helps, they may be real nasty

Cool thanks guys I'll give those a look once we get a decent day here in mn.

 

Would be wise to change my rear diff while I'm at it too.

Changed my front diff fluid, transfer case fluid and added fluid to rear diff (was only about half full). While the truck is much quieter shifting into drive and all the gears, it is still making noise in 4x4hi.

 

I noticed it makes a moaning noise but when I let off the gas it goes away.

 

I'm thinking it's something in the transfer case.

I have some moaning from time to time. It's not continuous, only when under load in 4x4. I think some of that is completely normal.

Check the U-joints on the front driveshaft. Are they greaseable? If so, have you hit them with a grease gun?

There are zerk fittings on the front end

I seem to recall my 99 GMT-800 being a bit noisy when in 4WD or AWD. Just make sure you are using the right kind of fluids in the transfer case, front, and rear diff, and I think you'll be just fine my friend.

Jvs, my rear diff was 2 pints low from the factory on my 2013. I always change all fluids in engine and drive train before 5000 miles on any new vehicle. My transfer case fluid looked like something out of my septic tank, and there was enough metal shavings on the magnetic plug to think my cat had its tail stuck in a light socket. All in under 5000 miles. I changed the transfer again at 10,000 miles just to make sure, and the fluid looked fine with very few metal particle on the plug. Kinda makes me wonder what Pedro, Juan, and Ortiz were doing when thy put my pickup together in Mexico.

 

Sure solidified my practice of changing all lubes early on.
