2000 Chevy 2500 HD or Not

Hey Everyone, I am new to the 3/4 ton truck world and the forum. Can someone point me in the direction to tell if my Chevy is an HD or not. It seems from research that 2000 was a transition year. Is there a code I can look for? It doesn't have the full floater, just a semi float 8 lug, It does have the 6.0, but no power bulge hood like the described in the same thread as this about the 01. It is an ext cab short box. I just picked it up this past weekend, so I haven't had much of a chance to look over everything, just from the research, I haven't found an exact answer, and all i have really done is confuse myself.

The vin is 1gcgk29u3ye343636.

I picked it up for cheap, but it needs a little work and I noticed it has small fuel leak right in front of the tank. With all the rust underneath, I planned to re-do brake and fuel lines eventually, so this just moved the time table up!

Not an HD, your grill and hood are the same as a 1500, that's the first sign. A 2500HD has a different grill and a power dome hood that is raised higher.

That is the Silverardo, which was the new body style in 99-00. It is what they called at the time a Light duty 3/4 ton truck. Came with the 6.0 l motor, 4 speed auto, and 3,73 gears. It was a pretty good old truck, put 186,000 on mine. It's a 7200 GVW instead of the 8600 GVW of the HD trucks. They came out with the 2500/3500 HD in 2001. If I remember correctly they had a 3500 HD out in like 97-98 but it was a odd truck it had a body lift on it of about 2 inches. Hope this helps, and welcome to the site. Good luck with your truck. :jester:

Check your driver door sticker, should say 8600 gvw which was considered HD in 2000 since that was the highest for a 2500 in the 2000 model year .

Ford did a similar thing back then with the F-250. It looked more like a F150 but was badged as an F250. Had the front end of the F150 and not the heavy duty look of the F250/F350.

Funny you mention the non Super duty F250. It had a 7 lug (wtf?) bolt pattern and was basically exactly the same as the F150 7700 (heavy duty half ton). They did some goofy things in 97-98.

The NBS of the time the 99-00 were LD models only 7200 GVW because they still had the old body style 8600 GVW. :jester:

Thanks for all the responses guys. What is a NBS? Also, the sticker says its an 8600 gvw.

I'm not really concerned if it is or isn't, I only pull a car trailer a few times a year, so I know and LD will handle it, just a benefit if it is HD. Its an extra vehicle that is there when I need it to have on a Friday night or if people are going with me. There is more room in it than a cavalier!

I really just want to know for when I am buying parts for it.

NBS shands for new body style. Some guys on this forum use abbreviations like that to identify what platform of truck they have. It's kind of obnoxious when guys say "I've got a 2007 NNBS" instead of GMT 900. Or my personal favorite, " i have a 99 OOBS".

OBS = 1988-1998 Trucks

NBS = 1999-2006 Trucks (GMT-800s)

NNBS = 2007-2013 Trucks (GMT-900s)

During the years where they offer both the existing body style or old body style (OBS) and the latest and greatest new body style (NBS) is where the concept originally came from. Your truck happens to fall into that same realm, it's considered a NBS as it is of the new style vs the outgoing body style. GM did the same thing in 2007, they had a 2007 "Classic" or OBS and the new GMT-900s that was a new style or NBS.

And GM didn't do that this time. The new body style 2500/3500's were all called 2015's, even though they were produced at the same time as the 1500 2014's. Then they made the usual model year tweaks during the summer so some now call them 2015 and 2015i.
