Dumping the onstar soon, not worth the money since they jacked up the prices, anyone have a idea on what features will stop working on my infotainment system when it goes dark?

The Canadian conversion may explain why the module is on back order here in the US

Except they're not doing them here yet either....

If you don't mind me asking, what is your source for this information? I haven't seen anything yet saying what exactly they are going to do other than that they are going to do "something".

i got a letter directly from onstar with a bit of vague info, and have some very close friends that work for GM look into it.

they have to honor their 5 year promise of the remote app, its probably being paid out a bit by GM in one way or another but its a feature that was listed on the vehicles, and IMHO - if they pull it without giving us the upgrade they open themselves up to potentially being sued for false advertisement.

they have probably known for a couple years that the 2g towers are being taken down, and i bet the upgrade was worked into the MSRP for canada.

i was just up at my cottage where only had very weak 2g coverage back in november and this weekend i had somewhat ok 4g signal, so some of the towers have been transitioned over by the looks of it.

Cool, thanks for the info in this. Nice to know that GM and Onstar are going to step up and sort this mess out.

I wonder what the chances are that they would upgrade the MyLink software into my truck to the software in the 2015+ trucks, now that would be sweet. Since the Mylink I have now is pretty much useless.

ill be at my dealership tomorrow or tues, if the shop foreman isnt busy ill ask him if its even possible but i doubt that it is. i think its more than just software, the 14 have HD radio and the 15s dont, which i assume that would mean its a hardware difference.

the onstar is just a standalone module they will unplug then plug a new one in (i disabled the onstar in my last car, just unplugged it and removed the antenna). back when i bought the truck i knew the 2g decommission was coming so i asked about it and they said they may even have the hardware in the 14s just may need a flash but they havent looked into it at all. and really that isnt that far off of a possibility, really look at all the signals modern cell phones can send and receive on.

When i signed all the paperwork for my 14 in dec, there was one regarding the onstar upgrade and requiring the vehicle to be returned for the update, which i had to sign. Anyone else in canada get the same?

Yah im sure its a pipe dream but one can always hope! I thought the WIFI had more interface with the 8" display (for settings and what not) but after reading a bit about it, it seems that all the setup has to be done thru Onstar (lame!). So it seems I'm stuck with a truck that has about have the functionality of other trucks built the same model year, yay!

Yes now that I think of it I do remember having to sign some Onstar disclaimer form.

i was just there and completely forgot to ask about the onstar and the new software....

but i did ask about the headlights and they have no info on it yet.

The update requires hardware since the newer cell phone technologies use different frequencies than want 2g used.

Same reason the old cell phones can no longer be used.

I finally today got to create a my onstar account after over 2 months of failed attempts both on my computer and on my cell phone. Once I was logged in, played around with the fob function area of the app, and it worked.

FIXED!

I have just returned from my dealer. They replaced the OnStar module and all the functions of the Romotelink are now operating correctly. The dealer indicated that since I reported my problem they have had three other 2015 units with similar problems and that the replacement modules continue to be on back order with about a 3 week wait. I am very pleased that mine came in and fixed the problem. Extended remote start is great here in northern Minnesota when, like this morning, temperatures are 20 below zero.

    • Seats matter a lot.  I would start there - good advise here.  I had a 2018 LT Colorado before my 2026 LT Silverado, and the seats are so much better in the new one it's not even a contest.  That was one thing I always hated about the Colorado and I owned two of them spanning 10 years - but I did it so I could park in the garage mainly.  Now I have a much larger property and a huge barn so I have plenty of parking options and a full size is more useful for maintaining the property and current hobbies as well.  I wasn't evenb thinking about the seats as part of the reason for the move to the Silverado, but after two back to back 700mile road trips I am sold on the LT seats w/ leather 100%.  The other LT features are also nice - one thing I really like is the power rear window on the back window by the bed.  And the lighting in the bed is also very nice to have - I doubt that comes on the lower models.  Power tailgate - also quite useful - it's a heavy slug!  What else - I could take or leave the screen - but heated seats and steering wheel and cruise control on the steering wheel is very useable - I would never want to live without that.  Even the colorados had that.
    • I think the ship has sailed on the fuel injection type - everything is getting direct now.  Does it help with mpg?  Not really and nobody buying a HD truck really cares anyway.  But that is what it is at this point.  Piston rings is something they may well adjust over time to get them right.
    • I don’t have detailed measurement data, but this past March we were hiking and camping in Death Valley and the Las Vegas area when this Spring’s heat wave hit with 105 plus temperatures and our 2021 L8T system kept our crew cab as cool as we wanted it (68F setting) with no trouble. Fan flows on auto once stabilized were fairly low. It seems like the OP’s system should be performing better.
    • Yes that's correct on the route to Durango - we just followed what google maps recommended.  That is quite the pass btw - very steep going back down.  I didn't even need manual mode - I just used cruise control and set the truck at 50 I think when it was a 45 posted speed and for the most part it just held it there by keeping it in the right gear - everyonce in awhile there is a sharper turn that I just braked for - but it was pretty smooth going down it on both sides.  Amazing views around there for sure - we had no real time to stop, were on the clock for a set-up time, but we did stop in some 2 horse town somewhere a couple hours oustide of Durango in the middle of nowhere for burgers.   And yes - lots up up and downs on the Durango trip but I think it's a big difference going 70 vs. going 80-83 with the aero in play with these big trucks.  Even the much smaller Colorado does reallt bad on gas going up over 70, I think I would have been lucky to get 18 on that trip in the Colorado honestly.  The full size is definately more comfy for a long road trip too, and the amount of gear we had would have meant two vehicles if I still had the Colorado.
    • I'm not sure what my temps were, but it would take my 2024 about 4-5 miles of driving before my AC started cooling. They replaced my compressor under warranty.
