Onstar Remotelink

Are you guys really expecting the app to be able to have functionality the truck doesn't otherwise have? The OS app never enabled remote start on vehicles without it going back to 2011 when the app came out.

Well my 2014 had a dealer installed GM remote start installed when I bought it new and several souces (dealership sales & service guys and aslo onstar support guy) told me it would work in the app so yes I expected it to work in the app not just the key fob. In the end my specific 2014 was not configured for remote start in the app to be able to work. My main issue I had to go back and forth with OnStar support for weeks just to get a straight answer. The app for Gramps 2015 truck sounds like it doesn't work at all and not connecting to his truck which it should so yes we'd expect his to work also.

It has been my understanding from the beginning that non factory remote starts wouldn't work. Maybe I'm just too jaded but dealers rarely have a clue on new stuff. It isn't their fault- factory training is something not everyone gets to attend and my experience with OnStar tech support has been less than stellar so I don't know I'd take their word for it either for something non-standard. When the app first came out in 2011 I made sure what I bought had the factory installed one because of this. I know that doesn't help here but I got the impression some here thought they'd magically have remote start without having the hardware.

In my case the OnStar and the remote start were factory installed. The remote start is NOT the option that allows for greater distance remote start since that option stated that it was not compatible with Remotelink. Since I wanted to be able to use my cell phone remotelink app I did NOT select that option.

Yes.

The remotelink app will tell you how many miles on vehicle, fuel in tank, range remaining, air pressure mpg, oil life remaining etc of any vehicle it's connected to. It can connect to multiple vehicles. Select them one at a time and check the fleet from your armchair.

Remote lock, unlock, start, cancel start, horn &lights, cancel horn and lights.

Send destination to vehicle ( to the vehicle navi?)

Get status of hands free calling number/plan for vehicle.

I know how the app works. I've used it since the day I brought the truck home almost 4 years ago. My point was I got the impression some folks thought they'd suddenly have remote start through the app even if the truck didn't have it.

Sorry. My bad.

I was interpreting that some were doubting that there is increased functionality using the remote app that does not exist with the fob based remote start.

After extensive discussion between the dealer, OnStar, and GM Technical everything is pointing to a defective OnStar module. The dealer has a replacement on order which may (will) hopefully solve this problem once and for all. I was present for part of the testing at the dealer and was impressed by the tremendous amount of information gleaned from the computer hooked up to the truck that had to be exchanged. One thing I did understand is that when GM Technical tried to call my OnStar number they could only get a busy signal.

This was my exact situation. Originally the dealership didn't know this, onstar support didn't even know this. In the end my dealership talked with GM engineers and got this same document and shared with me.

just FYI for Canadian remote app users.

you probably have gotten information from Onstar that the 2g network is being taken down and all onstar 2g services will go with it.

for the 2014s in Canada we will be getting a free hardware upgrade to the 4g module i believe it will include the wifi hotspot option. this free upgrade is as long as you have an active onstar service, which looks like it will include the extreme basic 5 year plan for the remote app.

im glad the onstar is owning up to this, i really like the app and maybe ill renew the service now that i know i wont be out a few hundred bucks for a hardware upgrade.

I received a call from my dealer yesterday and the OnStar module that is on order has been back ordered with no indication of when it might be available. I wonder if that means that many folks are having the same problem I am having using the SmartLink app.

To bad the purchase of the dealer installed accessory doesn't including adding the vehicle info to the onstar database.

It does work nicely with the factory installed remote start.

If you don't mind me asking, what is your source for this information? I haven't seen anything yet saying what exactly they are going to do other than that they are going to do "something".

Spoke with service manager today. He verified that upgrade is coming, but had no info about when.

He indicated there are areas in Ontario where the old 2g service has gone down and Onstar will not function until upgrades are installed.

Again, he had no idea when the necessary hardware would become available.

I have the same info too, I called OnStar and they specified that the hardware should be free of charge, install might be a charge from the dealership (I hope not!!)
