Bed Ballast - Dumb Southerner Question

I live on the eastern part of NC (right off I-95) and I've been to the mountains once. That was to a trucking school to get my CDL (The reason was because I figure if I learn in the mountains I can drive anywhere). The day I had to take my last test (road test) it was snowing and I still did the test. Grant it, it just started to stick to the road when I did it and it felt like a normal wet road from rain. Then when I left that same day to come home I looked in my rearview mirror at the best looking sunset (other than at the beach) with the mountain line.

I miss living up there and so does my wife, she said when the kids are gone we are moving back.

Why do you think we live in the north central part of the US? And no, I don't have any problems driving while you are having a hurricane. Lol

I miss living up there and so does my wife, she said when the kids are gone we are moving back.

 

I wouldn't mind visiting the mountains, but I'm so used to the beach and love the beach 2nd only to the country so I don't think I could live that far from the beach. I'm not right at the beach, but I can easily do a day trip there.

I wasn't talking specifically to anyone and I say north central part of the US because as far as I know a hurricane hasn't went that far inland. I've slept through bad hurricanes and even driven around in them when nobody else was driving. I like driving in bad weather for some reason, ran, snow whatever lol.

Having lived in both NH and MI I'd take a coastal hurricane over a tornado out here.

Me too. A tornado is unpredictable and forms in seconds so you can't get ready for them, I'll give you that. But, hurricanes do more damage to a bigger area. So either way you just hold on to your ass and pray lol. There has been a couple tornadoes in my town a couple years ago so we have dealt with it all it seems other than a mass flood where it ruins houses. That's with a river in my town and a big ass lake nearby that's in both NC and VA.

Hurricanes do pose threats but they're far more manageable. My parents house as well as the two apartments I lived in prior to moving to MI were on high ground. Never flooded, nothing even remotely possible could cause it to happen. Obviously people living on the coast or near water need to be prepared but it was never really more than power outages for us.

i use to have a 2wd sonoma a few (wow its been about 11 or 12) years ago. i use to keep bags of salt in the back of the truck for weight and a patio stone. the salt comes in handy, a couple times i got stuck on icy inclines and just threw a bit of salt under the tires and where my tracks would be, gripped and got up the hills. i had 4 snow tires on it too.

 

i love having 4x4 just to get out of crappy situations, but 99% of the time im in 2wd.

I appreciate all the suggestions and ideas. As I mentioned early I'm working on way of securing those buckets in the back so that they do not become hazard themselves. Anyone happen to know what the tie down loops in the bed are rated for off the top of their head?

 

As for hurricanes vs. tornados, I would much rather go through a moderate class 1 hurricane. In fact the last one I had to ride out was Charly. My wife and I were with Mote Marine at the time and we evacuated from Sarasota with a convoy of dolphins, manatees and sea turtles bound for Epcot's Living Seas. We arrived and got settled basically in time to realize later that evening that it was going to go straight over top of us the next day. Was kinda fun actually, got to play with dolphins and accidentally drove out onto the concourse underneath the big Spaceship Earth ball.

The thing about living in the south if we get an inch of snow the world shuts down. Lol

What the northerners don't like to admit is after the first heavy wet snow of the year we have to reteach every one to drive.

 

But at least there is snow removal equipment.

Seems like just putting on a set of cables would be much lighter to carry to the truck than 300 lbs of anything.

Think ill just move my tool box to the tail gate and use a locking cargo bar... if we get a bad strom in the DMV we only get a couple of bad snow days. ... not going anywhere if there's a ice strom
