14' Silverado 1500 z71 cranking issue

I have a 2014 z71 with 7k miles. For the last 3k miles I've been having trouble in the morning getting my truck to start. The colder it is, the longer it takes to start. (4 to 5 seconds). Once it's cranked, it will crank perfectly fine all day. Fortunately I live in South Georgia and its not that cold. I left my truck at the service center yesterday and they said that they have have never seen this happen but GM says that it falls within the standards. Supposedly, at 0 degrees it can take up to 12 seconds to start.

I'm not sure I buy this explanation. This is my 4th new Silverado since 99' and I've never had a problem like this. Is anyone else having this issue and if so what is the service center saying?

Yup unfortunatly its a Direct Injection thing.I hate it as well seems like a real step backwards.I hope the starters hold up.The only good thing is you just hit the key then let go it will keep cranking till it starts.Much colder up here in BC and yes when cold takes awhile to start

I've noticed some of the same issue, although not nearly as long as the 4-5 seconds you reference. I'm in NW GA so its not like I am in the cold frozen north, but I have noticed a bit of a difference between the start times when it is warm out and when it is cold out. Quite honestly, I haven't put too much thought into it other than when/if the battery goes out to try a better battery with higher CCA rating.

Figured it might be a combo of GM cheaping out on batteries, possibly the truck having sat on the lot for a long time, and these trucks having a lot of electronics...... I honestly don't know, but thought I would throw it out there that your not the only one who is experiencing this.

Edit - Savagecanuck1, you snuck in while I was typing. Thanks for the info about this being related to the direct injection. Would I be right in thinking that with direct injection it literally takes more force in cold weather to get the engine going as compared to non-DI engines or is there something I am missing?

I know for sure E85 will make the truck start slower when cold... just FYI in case you are running on corn.

Thanks for the update guys. There are 2 other guys at work with 14' silverados as well but they are not having this issue. Just doesn't add up but Ill be the first to admit that I don't know much about motors.

The 4.3L, 5.3L, and 6.2L (RPOs LV3, L83, L86 and LT1) direct injected (DI) engines (Fig. 14) available on some 2014-2015 Corvette, Silverado 1500, Suburban, Tahoe, Sierra 1500 and Yukon models may have an extended or long crank time during cold ambient air temperatures.

Direct Injection engines may have slightly longer cold crank times than that of port fuel injected engines. Direct Injection systems run at higher pressures and the mechanical pump on the engine must build up the required pressure before the first injection event occurs.

Following are typical DI engine crank times using gasoline:

If the temperature is below -22°F (-30°C), the recommendation is to perform an assisted start (such as with the use of a block heater).

For ethanol fuel, see #PIP5174: Extended Engine Crank Times When Using E85

I have noticed the same thing here in AZ. Now that it's below 50 degrees it takes a second to start. I also dislike the idle sound on the new trucks. But my look over comes that all. 08040b19aa833184547ae0f6a0efb863.jpg

I would think 12 seconds would be excessive ,we have had some chilly nights here around -14 celcius and mine might crank a little longer maybe 4 or 5 seconds at the most just saying so it might help you for a comparison.

I'm having the same issue it doesn't crank for 12 seconds though more like 6 seconds I also park in a garage so I dunno

Yes, my truck takes a few seconds to start sometimes, which is somewhat concerning since I live in northern Canada where we do see -40 or colder on occasion. I usually plug my block heater in but I'm a little worried about increased engine wear, even with the 0W20 oil. My old Sierra (6.0L) with 265,000 km starts up at the first revolution.

What increase engine wear are you concerned about?

I installed a new battery, but that didn't help .. Going to try non ethyl fuel next. Why would they not have a check valve to hold the pressure ??

My 2014 Silverado 5.3l sounds pretty rough when starting cold(only around 0C) . Sounds like the starter spins twice almost a second apart and that its not quite engaged or something. Is that normal?
