Clay Bar

Well it got into the high 70s (no rain) and i am on spring break.  So i used the zaino clay bar i bought this winter.  I clay barred the tailgate and the pass side (used dawn dishsoap beforehand) It worked nice i could feel all the debris coming off the paint.  I then added a coat of the Z5 i think it is.  Man what a huge difference.  My tailgate has never shined so much.   ihad a bunch of white specles in the tailgate and the pass side.  I got all the stuff off the tailgate but i need to redo the pass side one more time hopefully to remove everything.  Hopefully we wont get any rain the end of the week and i can do the drivers side and hood.

Yeah, I have been using a Meguires clay bar for a few years now. Those things can work miracles sometimes.

Just don't use it (outside) when it's about 110 out. The bar melts into streaks on the truck. PITA.

I'm going to give the clay a try. Every time I wash my truck it is like there is a fine overspray on it or something. Not a smooth finish like when I first bought it.  Being a black truck is there anything I might need to know when using the clay bar?

claying is easy.  I was scared at first i mean rubbing basically a putty on the paint

Make sure you lubricate very well (soapy water)

I bought the Mother's car care kit and I finally had a chance to use it this weekend.  The kit came with a clay bar, Instant show care polish(used with the clay), and caranubba(sp?) wax.  It took me 9 hours to clean my truck, most of it was trying to get some d*mn tar spots off the paint with the clay bar.  Finished it up with a nice coat of wax.  Man the paint is nice and smooth now.  I got some pics and will post when I get them uploaded to my site.  :flag:

best thing to get tar off is with prep-sol from dupont.  It strips the wax but also gets rid of the tar.  I drove through a contruction site last summer and got home and my truck was brown.  Took me 2 wks to get it all off it was a PITA

Ryan,

If you have not used the ZFX or even the Z1 from Zaino. You are missing out. The Z5 is great for scratches and swirls. But if you can do the ZFX (which mixes with the Z2). You avoid having to put the first coat of Z1.

The Z1 or the ZFX, just locks the polish. Make that dark color look like it is wet!

I have about 10 coats on my vette and about 4 on my Tahoe. It is a great product.

Ryan,

How long did it take you to use the bar?  For instance, how much time did you have to spend just on the tailgate.  Been thinking about trying it out this spring.

If you use Dawn dish soap and get all the tar off befor you start it will take about 2 hours to claybar your truck. You will love the shine I promis.

Tailgate took me 20-30 min.  Whole pass side took me an hr

I just tried "clay-magic".  Wal-Mart sells the kit for about 10 bucks, and it includes the clay bar and the "clay-lube."  I am very anal about my truck, washing it and waxing it all the time.  It is a little over a year old, and I tried the clay for the first time.  I washed it first, and then used the clay.  The clay was turning brown from all the crap it was getting off (industrial fallout, acid rain, smashed bugs, etc.)  Ever waxed your truck and it still felt like little specs of dirt were attached to the surface still?  This s*%t will get it off, and it went very quick for me.  The paint feels like glass - it is unreal.  I strongly encourage everyone to use this stuff.

I too today used Mothers clay bar on my truck. Made the truck nice and smooth. I then did the whole truck with 3m's swirl remover. It did make the swirls less noticeable but they didn't go completely away, I would recommend it. After that then I used Maguires carnuba wax. My truck came out nice shiney and smooth. I started at 11AM and finish around 6PM. It was a long day but I'm sure my truck appreciated it.
