2014 vs. 2015

I'm new to the forum and have been reading through all of the issues noted for the 2014 trucks. Why primarily 2014? Are there substantial differences in the two years? I'm in the market for a truck currently and dealers in my area still have several 2014s in stock (obviously discounted), but I don't want to go that route if it's just asking for trouble. Any guidance I could get would be appreciated.

2014 is the 1st year of this truck. It's a new truck from the previous gen 07-13. They have had a year to perfect and tweak things to make them better. You could say the 14 owners were the guinea pigs for GM. As for my 14 I have no issues. It has been back for 2 recalls that took about 15 min each to fix. It took me longer to drive to the dealer. Some love them some hate them but, that is the way all things in life are.

0 problems with my '14, but it was a late build. I think most owners with issues have early build trucks. Mine hasn't even had any recalls.

I figured the issues were with the earlier trucks, but I wanted to be sure. My last Silverado was a 2006 2500 with the 6.0 gas engine. I never had a problem in the 4 years I had it. I don't pull heavy items or plow snow anymore so I'm going with the 1500 this time. Thanks for the info.

It looks like there are vibration issues on both 2014 and 2015 models. I purchased mine in January of 2014, and it's silky smooth down the highway, but it sounds like there are plenty of others that have issues. I've had issues with heated seats and horrible transmission tuning, but nothing with vibration. The heated seat issues can be fixed with a few days in the shop. The transmission you'll have to deal with, so make sure you're comfortable with the way it drives and reacts, or doesn't react for that matter.

Before purchasing any 2014 from the dealer lots, be sure that you drive it at highway / interstate speeds. If you have even the slightest of vibrations at any speed then I'd walk away. Don't let the dealer tell you that it's just flat spots on the tires, or that it'll get better. Based on the majority of the people on the forum that have posted, it doesn't get better.

I'm happy with my 14. But it's the nicest vehicle I've ever had , mine was built 12/13 I've had it since may no issues besides the two recalls 25k miles so far. And gas is getting cheaper everyday. How can you tell if it's a 14 or 15?

I just bought a leftover 14. Had a "vibration problem", ended up being the JUNK Goodyear SRA tires. Dealer got it taken care of and all is well. As for the transmission issues, just had a BRAND NEW 2015 silverado loaner vehicle and the transmission feels the same. My '14 has gotten better the more I drive it, seems to have adapted to my driving style.

Good luck, the deals they are doing on the '14's right now is pretty crazy. I got 30% off MSRP and fantastic trade in value.

My 14 has no issues, it was built in july so it wasn't an early build. The dealer knocked off 10k and gave me almost retail for my 09 .

Mine is an early build 14, it's had all the updates, very problem free truck, 39,000 miles right now.

The 14's have HD radio, the 15's do not. The 15's have the ability to roll the windows down with the remote, the 14's do not. There is another thread that lists more differences, but those are the two that stick out in my mind.

If it were me, I'd buy the 15. Since my 14 is proven and trouble free, I'm keeping it. Good luck whichever way you go.

I have about 12500 on my 2014 and the truck is awesome, no problems other than a leaky gasket under the satellite antennae which the dealer fixed no problem.

You could buy a 2015 and just as easily have the problems some people have with their 2014s.

GM will fix most issues with the truck-the one they won't fix is the one that makes my truck a POS and the one that makes my Denali my last G M purchase. I waited until late 2013 to purchase....production started in April 2013. Way too many issues with the truck but most were fixed. GM refuses to do anything about the numerous vehicles with drive train issues and states that it's a normal condition 2014 & 2015 Silverado/Sierra. There are numerous posts and GM has issued bulletins saying normal so can only assume this issue affects many vehicles. I have made 3 trips to the dealer and have a GM case number...end result GM will not fix. They provide a bulletin explaining gear lash and tolerances, Just an attempt to get rid of you. And it might work on the uninformed public.

My Issue..."Clunk in Driveline/Rear End." My truck has had 3 distinct characteristics.

1. First one was the slip yoke was sticking. This made 2 & 3 seem worse and on 2 occasions it stuck so bad after sitting overnight in my garage that it released with a bang...thought I had hit something. Fixed by driveline shop greasing slip yoke.

2. Random downshifts & upshifts in lower gears that hit so hard that there may be a rear end clunk. Passenger once commented "Sounds like your rear end just fell off, ha ha." Usually happens in city driving, severity and frequency varies.

3. What I call "drivetrain slop". Reminds me of an older vehicle I once owned that had a worn out U joint. Put in first gear select and on-off gas I can feel maybe a 1/8 to 1/4 rev of driveline slop. Some gears seem better and at times drives normal. Assumed slip yoke was sticking again but dealer examined and said no.

Buyer beware! I'm guessing that GM knows what's wrong but fix is too expensive. I bought my first new GM truck in 1970; 20+ since and have never encountered this supposedly NORMAL CONDITION. Dealer and GM say that all the trucks do this, normal and not to worry....covered by warranty if anything fails. Maybe I'm too picky...Its only a little over $50,000 for the Denali.

I just noticed the 2015 Silverado LT trim level and above comes with (body color of the truck) door handles, exterior mirror caps and body side (door) moldings. If you want to change the body side moldings to chrome that would be an additional charge of $275 on DD and CC cabs and $180 on RC. On 2014 they only had chrome for most of these trim levels. I am surprised Chevy charges you the full price for chrome side (door) moldings when it already comes with truck color body side (door) moldings as standard equipment. There is no credit for this change over. You get a double hit making this change when ordering the truck.
