Changing transmission fluid

Anyone know if the tranny pan on the 2014 Silverado are as much of a bear to remove as the previous models. Last time I tried this on my 2011 I couldn't get the darn thing out with the crossover pipe in the way. I do a ton of towing and may want to do a dump and fill this summer but have nightmares of the last time.

I don't know, but it is a little bit of a process on the new 6L80E to drain and refill them, make sure you have the service procedure in hand.

That is a tough one. I did mine when I was pulling the exhaust for headers. I think i have heard of people loosening their exhaust enough to weasle it out though. Definitely suggest an aftermarket deep pan with a plug though as the replacement for heavy towing.

Yeah I thought of that...good idea. I do not want to wrestle with this pan again!

Well on the PML website one owner of a 14 Silverado with V6 claimed pan swap was easy and no clearance issues. Hmmm...got me thinking about the deep pan replacement.

Well I just crawled under the truck to check my pan. Sure looks like this should come out. Good couple of inches below crossover pipe and the shift cable no longer interferes. Looks like it could be a relatively easy job. That part scares me when talking GM! Pan gasket should be reusable correct? Anyone know if the rear diff gasket is also reusable?

If they are the rubber coated gaskets then yes. I would pick one up just in case. I have had luck in the past re-using diff gaskets cleaning them really good with brake cleaner and letting them dry completely.

Great....truck has low miles so I think tranny pan gasket should be reusable.

OK, I was at my dealer today asking about the price of a pan drop and filter change on my 2013 Silverado 1500, 5.3L, 4x4, 6l80E Six Speed transmission.

He said he was pretty sure it was a "Screen" and not a filter and they don't changed them. They just flush the transmission. Is that true, does my truck have a screen instead of the filter? If so, does the flush get the sludge and gunk on the magnet in the bottom of the pan out. When I did my 91 S10 Blazer many years ago, there was a magnet in the bottom of the pan and it was coated with a thick sludge of minute metal particles. I would expect after 40,000 miles in my Silverado, there would be the same type of situation.

Take your truck else where if they don't change the filter... He's an Idiot! A flush is the lazy way of changing fluid so I would do it my self if I were you it's not hard at all. Work on your truck and get to know it.

It has a filter, not a screen.

Thanks guys. I am going to tackle this soon. I have the supplies for the other three. The rear and front differentials and transfer case are on my list first. Too hot right now and I am not sure I want to tackle it while it is so hot. I may just do the rear diff tomorrow morning and see how that goes. But as soon as I am done with the three, I will be ordering the filter. I am contemplating a new gasket as well. Most say it is reusable, but I am worried that it might get damaged in the pan removal and then I would be stuck until my wife gets home with the Cobalt so i could go buy one. I have to find a local source for that.
