This is of the recent snow we got, we got about 6" which around here that's pretty decent lol. The first snow for my truck was a couple weeks ago but it was only about 2" at the most. I'm glad I waited to rinse off all of the salt from the 1st snow lol. Also not sure if you can tell by the snow in front of the front tires, but I came in a little hot and slid some lol.

I heard we might get some more snow tomorrow. I'm going to wait to wash mine until early next week.

The DOT loves that brine solution. I think they put it down when calling for a heavy frost! That makes more mess than all the snow, ice and dirt.

I've just kept mine in auto 4x4 but this snow we got the roads themselves were clear since they actually did a good job this time on plowing quick after the storm. So the only time I needed the auto 4x4 was in driveways and my front yard. So when I get to the road I just put it back to 2wd. There were some places that weren't plowed yet that I had to put it in auto 4x4 but that was mainly to help keep it straight. I'm not one of those people that keep it in auto 4x4 24/7, no need for it on dry or wet pavement.

 

When I went to that small open parking lot where I took that picture above, I tried moving just in 2wd and it didn't move. I even tried to rock it a couple times and it didn't budge. So I wouldn't recommend these tires for snow on a 2wd truck. I also have plenty of weight in the bed, even the weight of the stuff I have in the toolbox is plenty of weight. I'm not sure if lowering the tire pressure would have worked, but they were right around 40 psi so they aren't too high. The tires do just fine on any surface other than snow or ice unless you have 4x4 then it's fine on any surface. But again, that's the 4x4 so just about any tire can be decent with 4x4. I have 18" rims too by the way, plenty of sidewall so that wasn't the issue.

I dont trust that 4 wheel auto crap. I've seen guys with our trucks use that and it snap pieces (forgot what the internals names were lol) and it cost an arm and leg to replace and not covered under warranty. Even used the 4 auto on my tahoe once....once and it completely fried the transfer case switch the next day and had to get a new one.

I've seen guys with our trucks use that and it snap pieces (forgot what the internals names were lol) and it cost an arm and leg to replace and not covered under warranty. Even used the 4 auto on my tahoe once....once and it completely fried the transfer case switch the next day and had to get a new one.

Odd, since I've over 100k on my 99 and always used AUTO when I needed and everyone I know with trucks, suvs, etc use that instead of regular 4wd and no one has ever had any issues. Most even say they rather have that than manually putting it in 4wd when needed. There is differing opinions, but most rather have AUTO 4wd than manual in cases of things like light snow and ice.

I run mine in 4WD Auto when the roads are bad, and I get great traction, plus, the MPG hit isn't as bad as it is in full time 4WD.

Well I haven't had an issue with mine. I usually keep it in 2wd (not 4x4 auto) because I see no need to have it on auto 4x4 on a dry or rainy day, just when the roads go back and forth from fine to snowy and icy. 4x4 auto is way better than constantly switching between 4hi and 2wd. If all of the roads are bad enough to need 4x4 I'll just put it in 4hi. Even in 4x4 auto it's a night and day difference between my '14 and my old 98 Z71. Even though my '14 has the damn 3.08 gears when my 98 had 3.73s. Even switching I don't even have to put mine in neutral, just turn the knob (not talking about just between 2wd and auto 4x4, but between 2wd and full time 4x4 in high or low). Only thing I need to do is if I'm going in or out of 4lo I have to slow down to 1-3 mph but it was the same way in my 98.

 

Again, I'm not going to drive around 24/7 in auto 4x4, people say it helps in the rain but these trucks already have TC and stabilitrak so that's plenty good enough for rain. When the truck is in 4x4 at least TC is turned off.

Never heard of any "auto" 4wd issues since it came out except for switch issues

What makes you so certain the auto 4x4 is what caused the issue? It's very possible the same thing could have happened in 4hi.

Did he perhaps use auto 4x4 in hard off-road situations like mudding? I could see that happening since auto 4x4 is really designed for roads that go back and forth between conditions. I'd rather use auto 4x4 than when I had to just put my 98 in 4hi where it wouldn't be good for it to be on dry or just wet pavement between snowy and icy spots.

 

The only problem I've heard people say about auto 4x4 in general (not just on GMs) was it kicking in just on a wet road while or after it rained. Which is part of why there's no need to have it on auto 4x4 on normal type conditions.
