I used to stay up to date with all the latest tech toys. Today, I have time and no desire to keep up... Well, until I want something! Lol

I'm wanting a dash cam, with this Houston traffic and the road rage I see daily; be nice to have video evidence if ever needed. I hear a lot about these GoPros being a good quality, durable product and allows a variety way of use.

Would the GoPro work well as a Dash Cam? My daily drive times, about an hour each way.

I have a couple gopros, I would not use one as a dash cam. Reason being, they're much more noticeable and expensive than your typical dash cam. Most dash cams can be had with GPS, accelerometers, and motion sensing, gopros have none of these. I would be more worried about someone breaking in to steal the gopro than anything.

I used one as a dash cam for a while. The major problem I ran into was battery life. Unless you modify the case the camera sits in, you can't plug it in to keep it charged. Aside from that, the file size for the video clips can get pretty big which would require frequent SD card formatting to clear space. As far as theft, they easily unclip from the mount and can be stashed out of site while not in use. Other than that, the quality is good. I have since switched to a dedicated dash cam.

I go with cheap too.. simply look for dash cam label.

the encodings are from another planet, but now have an intel xeon as a home computer. It does anything.

let it munch on 4 cores and 8 gig of ecc ram to get what I want.

the only tip I got beyond cheap..

find a real encoding native to the camera..

be it real h.264/265, avoid quicktime if you are in the 90% of computing without an apple.

I started in 2006..dash cam was a big pursuit for a long time. Just got a cheap one last year.

g1w or easier to say brandless.. don't know what to call it. Ebay special. The encoding is exactly one of the nightmares.. where did they get that stuff. Even claimed HD.
