Fiat Chrysler(FCA) looking to merge?

Would think a Toyota or Volkswagen would have more to gain(& are large enough) from FCA than GM from a platform standpoint.

VW has been hellbent trying to be the worlds largest mfg for the last 10 years.

Unfortunately, the last time Chrysler tied up with a German automaker, it nearly ruined the company because they just about fired all of the American engineers (or they quit in droves because the German bean counters slaughtered years worth of their hard work on a vehicle platform) and replaced them with German engineers that removed vehicle content and used inferior materials for the American brands, just to make the parent German brands look better in comparison. They also got rid of American brands that were just starting to hit their stride again (and that is a particular sore spot for me) and just to access the profits that Chrysler was squirreling away at the time.

Interesting article. Where have we heard all that before? Packard, Studebaker, Nash, American Motors, etc. The costs to bring their manufacturing and products up to speed would be enormous and they have no money. Sounds like FCA as we know it isn't long for this world unless they do pull off a merge.

What brand was hitting its stride? Plymouth was dead weight, a waste of capital better used elsewhere. Same for Olds and Mercury. They served a purpose when there were unique models but since the 80s when it was just a badge swap those brands were just money pits. All three American brands are better off for having shed those specific brands.
