my 5.3 oil cap says 0-20W....?

Yes the 5.3 is a v8.

The 4.3 is a v6 and takes 5-30.

Which would also concern me if they only put 6 quarts in did they also use the wrong weight oil?

6 Quarts of Oil shows up on the dipstick at the low end (acceptable) range. 8 Is near the top and almost over flowing the high end of the dip stick on the 5.3L. If nothing was showing on the dipstick you needed at least 3 quarts to get it to 8 quarts.

If you had oil pressure you probably had at least 3 quarts of oil in there, as long as you didn't run it long with the oil pressure light on you should be fine.

6 quarts also takes 5-30 where the v8's take 5-20.

Just wondering if GM changed oil wt requirements shortly after...yours is 5-20w...mine is 0-20w

Seems I was wrong on the 5-20 it must be 0-20. I have the 4.3 so I can't check my cap for you 5.3 guys.

I like doing my own maintenance and repairs, unless it's over my head or I don't have a special tool that's required to do the job. I didn't like taking my truck in for the free oil changes and tire rotations, but I figured it was sort of free (pressure sure paid for it somehow in the price of the truck) so why not. I did 3 of them and by the time it's time for the next one the 2 years will be up so it's my turn. Luckily I haven't had any bad experiences either of those times. The first 2 I went to the dealer I bought the truck from and the only problem was that they didn't reset the tire TPMS sensors. But, all they did was change front to back so I knew which position on the DIC was for which tire. Then of course the 2nd time they were back in the same spot. The 3rd time I took it to another dealer since I was going to be out of town and was going to be literally 2 minutes from that dealer so I had them do it. They reset the TPMS sensors for me and gave me a bunch of stuff with the dealership's logo on it so I think when I get the seatbelt recall done I'll take it to the one that's out of town where I went to for the 3rd time of the maintenance warranty. It's only 20 minutes away so no huge deal for me. The handful of free stuff isn't why lol, it's that it seemed like they wanted to take care of me better than the dealer I bought the truck from.
