2015 Sierra headlights etc. vs 2016

I saw one report that GM made a change to the 2016 chassis to reduce the vibration issue. Something is going on because production start dates for 2016's are later than usual.

I love push button start but only have one experience with 5 years driving a 2010 Lexus RX. Change key fob batteries every 2 years, you are sol if battery dies. Amazing convenience not digging keys out of pocket....didn't want it now love it.

The android auto/car play will be a big deal for many. Even if it's not perfect at launch the 16's will get updates. The phone software is reportedly primary, auto unit more the "slave". The 15's aren't compatible but maybe a hardware change or aftermarket solution will evolve. The 16's also have a faster processor for better performance. The superior mapping over the factory systems make this a killer feature. Better phone integration, music, texts and ease of use hands free-a lot to like, IMO.

Some new colors might be appealing! I love the new Reds and the white frost.

Pricing of the 2015's make them tough to dismiss!

 

Don't count on it. Sure, there will be updates done, but it isn't out of the realm of reasonability to see the most useful "update" being a new generation of hardware.

 

I have had vehicles with push-button start. Honestly, I just don't see the appeal. It's a "toy" feature and brings nothing truly useful to the vehicle.

I haven't noticed any headlight issues with my '15 Sierra. I find the lights to work great in the city. That being said, I haven't driven in the country as of yet.

The silverado will have LED lamps.

You have a preference for a push button, I rue the day it comes to the trucks. I've been burned on push button ignition already.

 

 

 

 

Maybe you have mentioned it previously, but what happened?

 

 

My wife's Flex has a pushbutton. I don't drive her car except when we go together in her car. I rarely have the keys. She has just gotten into a habit of not giving me her keys and keeps them in her purse. Fine. ...as long as we're together.

 

One evening, she needed to pick up a prescription. I drove with the two dogs and her to the drugstore. She asked that I drop her off in front and then drive to a local café to pick up our phoned in order dinner to-go. I dropped her, then drove to the café. Just about the time I was going to push the button to kill the engine, I realized I didn't have a key to restart it. I was close enough that I could have walked back to the drugstore, but the car would let me drive the entire tank full of gas away from the key.

 

The first time this happens to someone and they die from the cold or heat somewhere in Timbuktu, they're be a corrective action. To me, as an engineer, it just seems so negligent of the car makers to not have run fault trees on separation of the key from the running vehicle. How about I stop the vehicle with my dogs in the car and lock the doors. Let's say it's hot and the idea was they'd be in there a few minutes until I could pick up a sixpac. Now they're locked in and it's 100F. I gotta break the window to save them. The tiny convenience of not taking a key out of my pocket and putting it in an ignition switch can have consequences from an small pain in the butt to several hundred in repairs to potentially something life-threatening. What's the attraction to this feature again?

I went with a '15 for the deep discount! The '16 looks good and I'm sure they will have some big improvements but going from an '08 LT2 to a '15

LTZ, I have zero regrets. I was worried about the LTZ lighting based on feedback here but they actually appear better than my '08.

Finally put some HIDs in the headlights. Good output and finally matched everything.

I think the Silverado is ugly. The Silvy isn't getting the LED headlamps, IIRC. I like the new Sierra, but not enough to pass up the better warranty and better deal.

LTZ and High Country get LED's:

The 2015 and 2016 6.2 8-speed only come with 3.42 vs the 3.73 in my 2010 6.2L. Last truck I test drove felt like it had less get up and go than my 2010, I wonder if they fixed that in the 2016?

I have not been able to find much information on what connectivity the new advanced phone integration will bring.

When the phone is plugged in USB the system lets the phone take over as the "brains" and the auto becomes more of a dumb terminal. There are several reviews already published! This allows these phone based systems to work with various brands. As the software matures most changes will be to the phone software.

Seems to me a good analogy is windows. The vehicle is the computer and the phone is windows. The computer gets updates I.e. Win 7, 8, 10 and still works with your old computer. Over time the windows software drives the need for a new computer to work best. So to have the best system you need a new car but at present prices not many of us will buy a new vehicle to get the latest hardware.

The push button start is a personal preference but it is coming standard on most premium vehicles. Remote start, wave your hand or foot to open rear hatch on an SUV, Bluetooth phone link, NAV, heated seats and the list goes on....nothing we have to have but many people desire these features.

And this is EXACTLY where my post was focused. As the phone software matures, and more "things" can be done, the hardware in the trucks will be inferior and will need HARDWARE changes. You can't run Windows 10 on a machine that was top-of-the-line when Windows 95 came out. Since right now is the infancy stage of this stuff, hardware requirements will increase more dramatically right now than they will once things have matured. And we already know how lacking the hardware is based on how slowly it responds as it is.
