When will we hear more info on the 2016s?

With production ramping up soon, it seems that we should be hearing more details. I have seen the 2016 GMC video advertisement, seen a few front end pics of the Silverado, and heard of the Carplay feature but thats about it.

 

Any one have any ideas when the complete details will be released?

Also, I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere, but I noticed yesterday on the GMC 2016 sierra page that the articulating running boards have a third position to the rear for accessing things in the bed. They rotate out horizontally on the same plane instead of folding or sliding straight out. There are pictures on the 2016 page. Kind of neat.

another thing the summary doesn't say is that 8 speed usage will be increased to include 5.3 applications on uplevel trims.

I was looking at their ordering guide and noticed they also added (PDC) Off-Road Sport Package and a couple other additional options that looked interesting to add to a new build.

I too am looking forward to the 2016 to see what happens once ordering starts. I decided yesterday to forego the 2015 and wait a few more months for the 2016. Since no dealers are willing to deal below Supplier Pricing, I figure I might as well get Supplier Pricing on a new 2016 and take advantage of the new features. I do worry about the cost of things like the new power running boards, but little things like the power lock on the tailgate and even wireless charging should make for an even nicer experience. Add Android Auto to the mix, and I just might hate the Intellilink a little less.

 

I would like confirmation from somewhere official that the Intellilink will in fact be software upgraded to include Android Auto and that it won't be a hardware change as part of a mid-cycle refresh. The GMC page only says support for Apple CarPlay now, but before it said something about Android Auto coming a little later. And the Intellilink page does not list the 2016 Sierra yet.

 

Curiously, one semi-local dealer told me yesterday that they are already able to send orders into GM for the 2016, but another told me sometime in October. I'm not sure if they are just playing games or what.

I would be shocked if there weren't HW changes for the new SW features. And regardless, GM hasn't made any features backwards compatible yet on the trucks. You get what you get and don't expect to be upgraded when something new comes out.

 

And my dealer is selling 2015s below supplier pricing right now. I thought about waiting, but they said there would be no incentives on the 2016s until probably December. They will all be focused on clearing 2015s off the lot. I'm about to make a great deal on a new 2015 Denali for about $9500 off MSRP.

Agreed & CEO Mary Barra said in an interview last year that more & more changes will happen every year (across all GM brands) in terms of technology. Whether it is for safety, android/apple to adaptive cruise control.

She said that technology was evolving much faster than a cycle of car designs can keep up with every few years.

Ordering started. HD crew cabs are the first to start production and should start either this week or next week. All other trucks follow suit in October.

Unless you have to, you never purchase a larger processor or memory than you need to do your task - it's a waste of money. I see this every day at my work. GM has no requirement or incentive to select HW that will work for future features. And then, if they buy up and get it wrong, all that money is wasted.

This order guide is a good reference. I wonder if its fully complete though (or I just could be confused). When I looked at the Equipment Groups tab it doesn't refer to a 3.73 gear ratio under the max tow pkg....unless I missed it. It calls out the others, but not 3.73. Although when you go to the Engines/Axles tab if shows it there.

Just hoping you don't have to get a slt with leather in order to get the max tow package with the 3.73!

My end game is to get the 3.73 gear ratio in a double cab / std box / 5.3L configuration.

They've already confirmed hardware changes from the 15 to the 16. What I was asking is if there could be a mid-year hardware refresh. Since they are only advertising Apple CarPlay out of the gate, and Android Auto is supposed to be supported later in the model year, I am hoping that the Android Auto support will be added via software. I would certainly hope they wouldn't do a hardware refresh in the middle of the model year in order to include Android Auto.

That's a bit of a slippery slope, though. If you use the exact CPU needed today, you may well be putting yourself in a position to where a necessary patch could need "more" and not work in the future. You have to over-engineer slightly or you likely paint yourself into a corner on being able to release software patches. Same thing goes for memory. Sometimes you have to change the programming a bit to where it needs more RAM to run.

 

On the other hand, you wouldn't use a CPU/RAM that can support ten times what you need today because you're absolutely never going to provide for adding what it would take to consume those resources - especially if you're talking about the ability to monitor / control an additional module not currently present.

Maybe...but don't count on it. They did a mid 2015 HW change on the trucks for 4G LTE WiFi Hotspot. You'll be super lucky if anything later on is backwards compatible.

 

Why would they deliver HW to vehicles that don't need it? That makes less sense to me. Even if they know that a change is coming, they have no responsibility to upgrade older vehicles. Again, if they build HW in anticipation of an upgrade, but they chose the wrong HW, then it's wasted money. It's cheaper to do nothing and cut the change in when you need it.
