Cracked windshield.......again!!!

So last January when the truck was only 6 months old, I noticed the rubber seal at base of windshield was wavy and not sealed flat against glass for about a 10" section on driver side, took it to the dealer and they said it would be covered under warranty. Took until April till part came in, then they call saying my windshield was cracked, and I tell them it wasn't. Then they say the technician needs to apply pressure to glass to remove wipers,so I said how do I know your tech didn't crack glass and I said this better be covered under warranty. So in the end they covered everything. So they paid a local auto glass place to replace windshield.

Then on Friday morning I'm driving to work about 5:30am, there's a car about 5 lengths in front of me and we're going 55-60 mph, then all of a sudden I hear a loud pop sound, didn't know what it was, then when an oncoming cars lights hit me, I notice a crack in the center of the base of windshield about 10-12" long and it goes all he way under rubber seal. So I go to dealer after work and they won't warranty it since it's not GM glass now. I went to glass place that installed it and they noticed a very tiny stone chip in center of crack and they won't warranty that. In the end my insurance covers it.

Just wondering if anyone else has/had similar issues? Is GM using weak glass?? Lol

I really don't understand how gm would use weak glass I think bad luck just happen to you. Glass is not invincible.

If it's SafeLite glass, it's thinner and more prone to chips/cracks. They should have put in GM glass on a warranty job.

I don't usually say this, but I'd make a stink about this. You should have received GM glass.

Was in the high 40's and a smooth road. It was done by a very reputable local glass shop. I'm sure they use a spec windshield. Just bad luck I guess. Let's just see how long the next one lasts.

Well, this is going to be a long post so get ready for my 2 cents worth.

Back in the 80's, 90's and 2000's GM used LOF and PPG for most if not all of their glass. My 2015 is not here right now to see what glass is in it, but my 2001 GMC came from the factory with LOF and my 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix came with PPG. The Pontiac still has the original windshield, the GMC has a replacement made by Pilkington. With that said, my brother was in the glass business for about 15 years and he always said that LOF and PPG was the only way to go. He did install the "cheap" glass if someone did not have insurance and was looking for a cheap fix.

What most people don't realize is that is a lot more than just the glass that you should be concerned about. If you look at most vehicles, they use either a chrome or black trim that is made out of some sort of plastic or rubber. When windshields are replaced, nearly every shop will use a generic replacement trim. After a year or two you can see that the trim shrinks at the ends and at the curves and will begin to discolor.

I insist that OEM trim be reinstalled on my vehicles. It insures that wind noise does not increase, does not shrink, fade or turn yellow.

While factory glass will "usually" take a rock peck without running, replacement glass will run at the first small chip most of the time. This is not always due to it being cheap glass, but has a lot to do with how the replacement glass was installed. Have you ever watched someone replace the glass? Most installers will go inside the vehicle and use suction cups to "seat" the new glass. This causes the glass to be under a strain so that it will run as soon as it gets the first chip.

GM doesn't make glass or laminated AS1 windshields. Most are made under contract in Mexico or China. We once received a container of windshields in the warehouse from an offshore manufacturer and a few still had the GMC logo on then by mistake.

Rock to the windshield caused a crack and you want a warranty claim?! Things happen, no ones fault, no one to blame, including GM. Get an estimate and weigh ins claim against out of pocket.

I agree with this, why would gm cover your windshield because a rock cracked your glass? I had a rock crack mine and my insurance paid for a "gm" windshield with my truck being so new. ie gm stamp glass

Was the windshield the tech broke gm glass? (ie gm stamp) Why would they and why did you let them put in a non gm glass for warranty work? That is a major issue imo

I don't know if they replaced it with GM glass. I didn't see the stone chip till they pointed it out it was so small. My complaint was that it was only 7 months old and this happened so I thought maybe it had a 1 year warranty. My ins covers it and I have no deductible so no worries.

In the mountains, especially for skiers, replacement windshields are a maintenance cost. If we're not replacing them every 2-3 years from cracks and runs, they need replaced from rash that makes it nearly impossible to see in sunlight or oncoming lights at night.

It has to do more with the angle of the windshield.

I have three hard hits so far and have three nice pits.

I'm actually suprised it didn't break yet.

When you get a small pit or spider crack, spend 5 bucks and get one of the DIY windshield repair kits. They work.

I got a spider crack in my 2000 Sierra when it was new and drove it for 14 years......it never cracked. If it cracks anyway, well you spent 5 bucks no big deal.

I had a small rock hit the lower passenger side of the windshield, below the clear part where the adhesive goes. It sent a crack about 12" long across the glass.

Called Safelite and they contacted my ins. company, Farmers. They specified OEM glass and are installing it tomorrow. Hope it goes well.
