What are these rails for?

Saw this Silverado in a parking lot that had chrome rails on the bed side tops and a retractable cover.

They look cool, but I don't know what the functionality is.

Maybe the owner is on here and can clarify? Apologies in advance for my mental incapacity.

Trucks owned by a 60 year old who thinks those chrome grab rails on the bed still look cool.

They probably look cool to him so I say "to each his own".

Myself, they look better on a Ford... anything helps on a Ford... LOL

I would agree that the unlimited tie down options with the cover open is the functional purpose of this setup. They are quite useful when securing tall, light loads. I also believe there is the appearance aspect for the owner. Regardless, it is a nice truck!

They also protect the tops of your bed rails from getting damaged. This was more important before the plastic rail tops we have now. But there is a little extra protection there.

They are almost worthless as "unlimited tie downs" because they only secure at each end in the stake pocket and get very wobbly in the middle.

If you were to really tighten down a load you would warp them completely. I had them on my 2004 SLT. I didn't even like grabbing them when I stepped on the wheel on the side of my bed. Granted I am an old soul but I was only 25 at the time and don't think they looked bad with my particular setup.
