6.2 Silverado

Looking at a couple different 6.2 Silverados. One is a 2010 crew cab 4x4 LT with 40k for $27,000. Another is a 2011 crew 4x4 LTZ with 30k for $31,000. I am looking at keeping whatever truck I buy next for a very long time. What are big issues with these trucks if any? Are they as reliable of motors as they come? I know no afm so thats a plus. What about dash cracking issues how wide spread is this issure? Are rust problems as bad as previous generation? Is it worth the extra $ for the 6 2? Any info on these 6.2 would be great

6.2 would be the way to go IMO. don't run in to the pesky lifter problems as often as you would with a 5.3

Kick in another 3-4 k and get a brand new 2015 with a 5.3. The new 5.3 has as much punch (especially running e85) as the old 6.2...

OP, I'm with you. I'll never own an AFM truck, even if that means I have to switch brands in the future. I'll go get a 6.4L Hemi with the Aisin 8-speed or something like that.

 

The 6.2 is a great engine. Power to spare, and it loves to rev. My Denali has 70k miles, and if I keep it that long, I fully expect it to go to 200k. No major issues I'm aware of for the L9H.

 

The only item of concern I have is that it sounds godawful when it's cold - piston slap. Even my 17 year-old daughter noticed it when she drove away without letting it warm up. She calls me up saying, "I think there's something wrong with the truck. It sounds like a diesel." :freak:

 

From an absolute standpoint, I think my 6.0 LY6 with the cast iron block might have slightly better longevity than the all-aluminum L9H, but that remains to be seen. My LY6 already has 150k miles.

AFM can be turned off. But I think AFM, alum bodies, all the eco stuff is going to be hard to avoid in the next few years regardless of the make.

Love my truck, all mods are in my sig. Only issue I have had is the headers leaking a little but this was fixed with a little tweaking. Like mentioned before, truck loves to rev and has tons of power, especially after a few mods, tune and headers being my biggest gains. Do not buy one for gas milage, average around 14 on interstate driving 75-80. Before my mods and 10 ply tires that number was around 16-17 though.

Doesn't the 6.4 have their MDS system on it as well? Could be wrong as have not followed Fiat lately.

 

What gear ratios were available with 6.2 in 09-13

 

Mine has 3.42 in a 2013. Think the Max tow package had the 3.73's, but it has been so long do not remember.

Yes, the Hemi has the MDS, but as far as I can tell, there are no issues with it. It was designed by Mercedes-Benz, while Daimler owned Chrysler. I have an '06 300C with the Hemi that has 75k on the odometer, and it still runs perfectly and does not consume oil. I don't have a problem with cylinder deactivation per se, I just have a problem with the GM system.

 

My Denali has the 3.42, and it goes like stink. It'd be downright scary with a 3.73.

I think the chrysler just cuts spark and fuel instead of shutting lifters and valves down as well. Mechanically passive so to speak.

I had a 2011 with the 6.2 and 3.73's, talk about get up and go!

No, it is a mechanical system, but I guess Chrysler managed to make theirs work without all the headaches of GM's AFM. Here's what I found on it from a Jeep board:

 

The MDS provides cylinder deactivation during steady speed, low acceleration and shallow grade climbing conditions to increase fuel economy. Both four and eight cylinder configurations have even firing intervals provide smooth operation. Two cylinders on each bank are active when the engine is in four-cylinder mode, every other cylinder in the firing order. All of the cylinders that are deactivated have unique hydraulic valve lifters that collapse when deactivated to prevent the valves from opening. Engine oil pressure is used to activate and deactivate the valves. It is delivered through special oil passages drilled into the cylinder block. Solenoid valves control the flow. When activated, pressurized oil pushes a latching pin on each valve lifter, which then becomes a “lost motion” link. Its base follows the camshaft, but its top remains stationary, held in place against the pushrod by light spring pressure but unable to move because of the much higher force of the valve spring. Deactivation occurs during the compression stroke of each cylinder, after air and fuel enter the cylinder. Ignition then occurs, but the combustion products remain trapped in the cylinder under high pressure, because the valves no longer open. No air enters or leaves. During subsequent piston strokes, this high-pressure gas is repeatedly compressed and expanded like an air spring, but fuel is not injected. The cylinders deactivated are 1,4,6, and 7. The normal firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.

My brothers wife's Hemi challenger lost a timing chain at 40K miles. The dealer in Dallas that fixed it claimed it was caused by the V8-V4 change and a common problem. Her car is a 2010 model.

I love my 11- 6.2. I would love to have a 2016 but can only afford one new truck at a time now, and no way I am getting rid of my Vett.
