Suction noise after catch can install

Port injection engines eliminated all intake valve coking the old carbureted engine used to experience, so you never had to deal with it in the past.

 

By 20-30k miles we are seeing intake valve guides already worn beyond acceptable tolerances and oil consumption rises. Unstable valves usually only become a problem at higher RPM.s

 

The money lost on the reduced fuel economy is a bummer, and over time as these hard crystalline deposits break loose, some of the smaller ones can be forced between the piston and cylinder wall causing scouring which compounds the issue allowing more blow-by.

 

After 50k or so miles chunks large enough to get trapped between the valve and seat can come loose, and if that occurs the pistion makes contact with the valve and bends it like this picture shows:

So overall longevity of the engine as a whole goes down. There are still examples of some with 100k miles and still running, but not well.

 

Clean the vales and put on a good separation system and then every 10-15k miles do your own CRC/Seafoam treatment for less than $10 and you will have as long of trouble free life as before. These dual evacuation suction systems also improve the function of your PCV system and your oil will remain clean far longer as well reducing wear.

 

 

I think cared for these can go 200-300k miles, but not if neglected unlike the port injection engines that I have otrn down at 150-200k miles plus and not a spec on the valves:

There will be some though that still run good enough like you state.

 

On hose, look at any auto parts store for 3/8" transmission cooler hose. It is stiff wall.

I know what seafoam is. You just add it to your gas tank right? Every 10-15 thousand miles.

No....nothing put in the fuel tank ever touches the backsides of the valves anymore, so that would waste it. You would perform the engine running solvent based upper induction cleaning service.

 

Look at how old port injection constantly sprayed the backsides of the valves keeping them clean and cool preventing any deposits:

Now the fuel is not introduced until just before ignition, and only directly into the combustion chamber at 2000-3000 PSI (that is direct injection):

So don't ever get conned into putting any additive in the fuel tank, it cannot touch any part internally to help anything. Same with top tier fuels. They used to be a great plus with port injection, but now it makes no difference.

 

We have alot of educating to do for the public to understand these new engines and how to care for them as the dealers and automakers are not.

Question for you guys: I just installed an elite can tonight on my 5.3 and had the light sucking sound too. If I pinch the hose on either side of the can, the noise stops, so is it the can itself, or deforming hoses? Connections are as tight as I can make them, and drain valve is shut.

I believe it's the narrowing of the hose that restricts air flow causing it. Mine did this until I replaced the hose with 350 psi hose. No more noise.

Only way is to stop the oil and other compounds from making contact with the valves, and that can only be accomplished with a truly effective air/oil separation system like the ones were talking about here. For GDI The ELite E2-X series is the most effective on the market. Then every 10-15k miles perform a solvent based engine running upper induction cleaning service. This should NOT be performed if you already have more than say 20k miles on as the amount of coking if great enough when broken loose can damage the engine. It is important to start when new, or to perform a manual intake valve cleaning when installing a separation system and then your starting new. There will always be a small amount that forms from the EGR emulation of the cam timing, but that is minor in comparison to what forms from the contaminant laden PCV vapors.

I put the e2-x on at about 12k miles. Should I still do the solvent based upper induction cleaning?

How hard is it to do that?

Yes, ONLY if you install a system like the E2-X as w/out the danger is in breaking loose those hard deposits and the damage they can cause. It is not hard to do, it involves introducing this solvent while running and it soaks into the deposits expanding and loosening them so as much as 50% can be expelled out the exhaust. Bot can only safely be used when deposits are at a minimum. SO that is why the importance of installing a E2-X system from the start.

 

Google search Seafoam, CRC GDI IVD cleaner, Amsoil has it, BG has it, Mopar, etc. (all are very similar in formula). They all advertise to use it at any time, but we see the damage done when build-up is above 15k or so miles already.

Is there a walk through somewhere on how to do this? I'll add it to my todo list when I change oil. I expect to keep this truck for about 200k. Oil catch can already installed. .
