3.08 and 35s. Noticeable but not a deal killer. Pulls just fine. Want to regear, couldnt afford it. Had to suddenly move across country pulling my 10k camper loaded. Truck and trailer scaled at 15500. Went from Salt Lake city, Utah. To Nashville,TN. 1650miles. Pulled great. Never got over 215 on Temps. Also don't care what you think about the weight. Only letting yall know it will do I without breaking a sweat.

So you towed 10k with a 1500 5.3 with 3.08 on 35's?

Did your truck ever get to 5th gear

Yes. Not into overdrive tho. Was able to set the cruise at 65-70 most of the way. Fuel mileage was less then acceptable though.

If you can't rely on your truck why even have it. If this truck couldn't handle that, it would have been traded off half way through the trip. People baby their trucks a lot. It's a truck. Not a car. Use it like one. Just my thought.

Hey I don't judge. More power to you. I by no means baby my truck or treat it like a pavement princess, but towing my 6500lb boat with 3.08 on stock tires sucks. And I usually only tow it from the storage to the house for maintenance every now and then and that's about 5-10 miles up and over a few hills. Truck can do it no problem, but not something I'd want to do long distance. I'm budgeting for a set of 4.10's in the near future to accommodate my 33's.

After the cross country trip. I wouldn't even hesitate on a 200 mile camping trip. Ideal? No. Once I get the funds I want to get 4.56s put in. I'm no stranger to towing. Haha.

The truck wasn't even rated to tow that camper in the first place, let alone with 3"+ taller tires on it. And 5th and 6th gears are both overdrive gears in the 6 speed

I can see that. I don't tow all that often, but when I do its usually my boat. Don't have any pics towing it with my new truck, but heres a few with my old truck.

Trucks these days are so under rated and babied it's not even funny. They can handle much more then people throw at them. I miss when trucks were trucks and not rolling problems. It's a truck. Use it like one. If you have any doubt in your truck. Sell it.

You guys wanted realistic evaluations of these trucks with higher gears and larger tires. I had a situation that put these trucks to an unrealistic test. And it passed the test. Is having higher gears ideal? No. But it works. Checked the truck every hour or two for issues. Nothing got warm enough to even care about.

Have had the lift and wheels on the truck for 47k miles. And no problems. Trans fluid is perfect and oil is changed regularly.

Should you worry about putting bigger wheels and tires on? No I don't think so at all. Your fuel mileage will suffer. And in RARE cases something fails(99% of the time it's a fluke and just a weak part)

Wasn't the tow capacities of the 3.08s revised down because they were overheating trying tow at the capacity and couldn't do it?

Posted

Vinny, can you post pictures of your tires? I too have the 3.08 and I'm considering 33" E tires. The truck is sluggish enough with stock tires, so it makes me nervous without re-gearing.

Sorry, I don't but you can look at my gallery. I have 2 pics in there after the level and tires. This is my first V8 in a while, it may be a little sluggish but I didn't buy this truck to be a racing truck.

Capacities were revised by a couple 100 lbs because GM started using SAE J2807 to determine tow ratings. The reduction in tow numbers could be for a mulititude of reasons but probably not due to an overheating issue. Smcgillis10's truck would have burst into flames had that been the case haha.
