serious question on tune

yes I looked and couldn't find it so sorry if this is out there already.

 

so I just leveled my truck 2.5 inches and put 285/75r17. so obviously it changed the way my computer reads.

 

I went to two local tuners to have them tune my truck and they both stated they wouldn't recommend doing the tunes till my warranty is out. my truck only has 3k miles on it. I asked them how much to just change it to read the correct tire size and they wont do it because it will also void out my warranty.

 

I called the dealer and they said they can change it to read my correct tire size but I have to call IT support, have them email a file with the correct reading ( 50dollars for file) then take my truck to the dealer and they would charge me 125 to install the file. and that would not void my warranty.

 

I really want a tune but I just cant get over voiding out my warranty for a tune and to show me correct speed and mpg and to get better response and shift points.

 

so what REALLY makes you guys not care about the warranty and just going with the tune and voiding out the warranty?

This is the auto manufacturers way to try and curb what they believe are fraudulent warranty repairs. When tuners really became popular is when the diesel pick ups started getting turbos. The tuner allowed them to gain massive amounts of HP with just the electronic tunes. I know of people that burned a motor up on the weekend, took off all of the hot rod parts including the tune and took the vehicle in for repairs under warranty. Previous to the 2014 trucks, the dealer could make any change and you never went thru GM. Now, everything is networked and only GM makes the new files. They are then forwarded to a dealer who installs whatever GM sent them. The is also a flash counter for every time the file is changed and they now keep stringent records. I do not believe they will void your warranty for changing your speedometer setting to read the correct speed with a custom application. I however, would use the GM route and avoid the whole hassle for just that change only.

A tune does not automatically void your warranty. Never has, never will. IF a tune however causes a problem... that problem may not be covered by warranty.

 

So, as an example... if you tune your truck to have +30hp and wonky shift points... and then your power window quits working... that has nothing to do with it, and you still have warranty looking out for you. If you blow up your engine... well, then you may just have a problem.

yeah I get that if something happens to the windows that stuff is still covered.. im more worried about motor and drivetrain. on these new trucks they can read anytime it has been messed with. no matter what. if it was not messed with by dealer, it voids any motor or drivetrain warranty's. yes I get that chance of something happening to the motor or drivetrain is not likely to happen but you know. one of the tuners that I know stated all he did was correct the speed on the computer on another customer and the customer is having motor/drivetrain problems and since they saw that the customer had the computer messed with they wouldn't look at it or cover it unless they paid. even though all he did was correct to read the correct tire size. that is my worry.

 

I guess I will just keep it the way it is and wait till my warranty is out. it worth losing motor/drivetrain warranty

If it's not a stock size gm cannot and will not reprogram for the change in tire size

that's incorrect. gm can and will reprogram it to the new tire size but it cost 175 dollars and if gm does it, it does not void any warranty. if I have someone else do it then it voids out any warranty for motor/drivetrain even if its just them reprograming it to match new tires,

Only if it is stock size. Unless they are using some sort of aftermarket device. The tech2 only includes the stock sizes.

ive already talked to the dealer and IT support. IT support creates a file with the tire size I run (285/75r17) and they email me the file. once I get the file I take it to the dealer and the dealer will upload that file to my computer and it will refresh everything and read with the tire size 285/75r17. its 50 dollars for gm to create the file to send me and 125 to install the file. gm is the only one that can install the file to not void out the warranty. if I take the file to someone else to upload then it voids the warranty.

I will re-iterate what Ryan said, the dealer absolutely can not recalibrate the ECM for any tire size outside of the stock tire size via any factory support GM means. I don't care what your dealer tells you, no matter how softly they rub your man bits. It cant and wont happen unless your dealer is using some sort of aftermarket device to handle this type of request. GM does not offer any service at all to do that, believe me I have contacts deep with in GM that have specifically have asked about this and adamantly have been told that GM has no intention of offering this.

 

When the dealer remotes into GM system with your VIN the GM global system will only flash the modules in your truck with the most recent calibration for that module, they do not offer the ability to substitute or modify the calibration due to changes the customer makes.

 

Case in point, all of the tire sizes GM uses on the trucks (17, 18, 20, 22) are all with in a 1/2" of the same rolling circumference. GM uses the same tire info in the calibration for all trucks because of this.

 

GM tire heights by wheel/tire size:

 

17" - 265/70-17 = 31.61"

18" - 265/65-18 = 31.56"

20" - 275/55-20 = 31.91"

22" - 285/45-22 = 32.10"

Since I can't seem to copy and paste, you should read a post I made in "Tune vs warranty" thread. And as far as your local tuners, if they said that, I wouldn't trust them since they don't seem to know what they're talking about. If all you want to do is change tune for tire height just get a Diablo. You can tune just for tire height if you want.

not sure what your high up guy told you but I just made an appointment with the dealer I bought my truck from and they are going to recalibrate it to read the correct tire with me running 285/75r17 so everything reads correctly. not sure what they use but its something they do all the time he said it and they can put in any tire size and he is actually going to only going to charge me 135 to do this. I will find out if it actually works. my speed is off by about 5-7 right now and once its done I bet it will be 100% accurate. he also stated it doesn't do anything to my warranty.

 

so in two weeks I guess we will see who is correct.

Try "Tune vs warranty", or search for posts I made. But, it will not void the warranty. The dealership rep your talking to does not know the rules, he/she's just saying what's easiest.

I started the tune vs warranty thread because I would like to change a few things as well as tire size, the bottom line is " you gotta pay to play " I guess everyone has to ponder on the risk vs reward aspect and make the decision that works best for them. Any alteration other than stock can potentially void a part that is modified and I am perfectly fine with that but flashing a tune to your ECM that cannot be hidden is a whole other thing . I am leaning toward a tune but I am in no rush .

I can tell you right now, your dealer us not using anything GM approved or any of the GM programs to do this. I have confirmed this thru the GM engineers and several people on this forum that are dealer mechanics and work on these trucks have confirmed this as well.

 

Believe what you want, it is all moot as calibrating for tire size change if done correctly would not cause any issues with warranty at all even if GM did verify the calibration details.
