I'm an idiot. Fixable?

Was removing my stock antenna the other day and apparently I had the tightest %#$@ing antenna ever . It took two hands wrenching on it just to loosen. The pliers slipped and you see the result. It's through the paint.

 

Is there any fixing that or would it take re-doing the entire fender to paint and blend in?

Ouch! Can you catch your fingernail on it? If not, then a good buffer should be able to get it out. Even if you can, you probably can get it buffed out enough that it will hardly be noticeable.

1. Always us the correct tool for the job, pliers was not the correct tool.

 

Carry it to a good body shop and let them try to buff it out. That is unless you have a buffer and are good at using it.

Looks deep. Might be able to blend a bit with some M105 (meguires) and a good pad.

 

Othewise a detailer might be able to wet sand and blend

If it is down to the metal you can add some touch up paint and sand/buff. Do it a little at a time and repeat.

Man, I hate it when I do things that. Looking at the picture, that's not fixable with just buffing. It's through to the primer.

 

That's probably a $300+ repair at a reputable body shop.

 

If you have the time and inclination, I've had VERY good luck with the following products and process, and it costs less than $40:

 

Items needed:

 

• Dupli-color touch up pen in your color (or GM touchup paint. Just make sure the paint is fresh)
• Langka Blob Eliminator - This is the magical item. http://amzn.com/B000BAT622

 

Process:

Apply the touchup paint with a fine detail brush. Use more of a dabbing motion, rather than a brushing motion. Apply light coats until the paint builds up to just above the level of the original paint. Let it dry thoroughly overnight.

 

It will look like crap at this point, but it's supposed to,

 

After it dries, follow the instructions in the Blob Eliminator. It is a combination paint thinner and mild abrasive that melts away the touchup paint, but doesn't affect the original finish. Go lightly with it until only the paint in the scratch is left. Let it dry again for a day or so, then wax it.

 

It's very forgiving, and you can always add paint back if you take too much off.

 

Will it look like factory? No, but it will look so good that no one but you will notice it.

 

I've been very impressed with the results I've gotten, but you can always get it painted professionally if it doesn't come out to your satisfaction.

A highly visible location like that is not a good place to be trying to develop new paint matching skills. If you don't know what you're doing it'll just turn into something that requires a more expensive fix.

 

Take it to a reputable body shop.

If your removing your stock antenna be prepared for wind noise. I put a stubby antenna on my truck and the noise drove me nuts. I ended up putting the factory antenna back on.

The only issue with this is the body shop paint will be base only no shine our hardener. The touch up will be a gloss when dry.

Bummer. Yeah it's fixable go to a good body shop, you dropped a good chunk of change on that Sierra don't skimp on this repair. I did the same flipping thing but, not as bad on my last truck, I was too using not the 'perfect' tool for the job; an adjustable wrench. I try to use pliers very sparingly I've got the scars on my hands to prove it from those SOB's slipping off.

I purchased touch up paint for mine. You can get a small bottle from the dealer. They will color match it to your truck color.
