V4 mode gas mileage?

Recommended Posts

I did some extended tests with my truck with AFM turned off and turned on. My mileage stayed pretty much exaclty the same. With similar driving over the course of a few thousand miles, I still averaged between 16-17 mpg on most tanks.

AFM is a gimmick. Nothing more. It might save <10% of gas, but at the cost of more complex engines, that just increase ways to fail down the road.

I have been running with AFM off now for the last 10k miles with no ragrets.

Yup what he said. Turn that thing off and drive your V8

Bought a truck to haul and tow, not to meet epa standards lol (although good fuel economy is a nicely added bonus I must say haha)

Gimmick? Okay, GM (and many other manufacturers) just spent 100's of millions of dollars to design a gimmick that saves no fuel, adds expense to engines and potentially adds another warranty component they have to pay on, yup... It is far from a gimmick. Even you agree by noting it can save up to 10% mpg or less (highlighted above) and noting it stayed "pretty much the same" which tells me it worked. If it can even save 3% (which I promise it does at particular speeds and scenarios) that is around half a mpg. Total that up over 100K. Each person will be different and as noted it depends on driving style, area, weather, roads and their conditions, ect. To say running on four cylinders on a flat road doesn't save fuel is preposterous.

It works, how people say it doesn't is beyond me, it just depends how much for each person. Want to disable it? Knock yourself out, you aren't simplifying your engine anymore, to do that you need to do away with the all the mechanical running gear that drives it.

Nice to have a choice huh? Either way I am glad GM and other manufacturers have this, especially when I see my MPG jump when switching in to four cylinder mode on the highway at reasonable speeds, happens a lot in Texas. Even more so when going down a long stretch of 45 mph road...

Our trip to see family yesterday our truck: Averaged 24MPG going about 40 miles through cities doing about 45-60. Once I got on the interstate for the other 50 miles doing 75-80MPH that dropped to 20.5 by the time we got to our destination.

Of course it works, but YMMV. I've averaged 17.5 mpg over the ~8000 life of my 6.2L in 50/50 mixed driving, so I can't complain. It only really kicks in when cruising on the highway or decelerating, so who cares. Why anybody would want to turn it off is a mystery to me. It's barely noticeable.

Mine clunked in and out of AFM mode, tuned it out and it's butter smooth and drives a whole lot better due to the tune (also getting better mpg l's)

I don't remember mind doing that. Before I had the exhaust done the only way I knew which mode it was in was by looking at the dash. I don't feel it go back and forth. I really only feel it if it's in V4 deaccelerating so it's engine braking and then I give it a good amount of throttle, but even then it's barely there. IT wasn't a clunk or anything like that either.

my AFM was not seamless. It was smooth, but still very noticeable.

My miles per tank this time around. For the most part I was able to stick to my daily route. Except for a couple extra trips with the family. Not to bad as I expect mileage will increase with miles put on the engine.

For the most part I would set at 60 mph cruise control. I would of had prob at least 20-30 more miles but I had to go into court and sat in all ot traffic coming and going, and hauled the family to a b-day party
