**** Re-Treads!

They should be outlawed and the price should be passed onto customers. Just my opinion though. I wonder how many deaths have been caused by retreads?

That makes sense, but people already complain about higher diesel fuel prices raising the prices of everything else. In reality, since the % of retreads coming apart is small compared to total retreads then it makes sense to have retread as an option. DOT does require brand new tires for the front steer tires. Retreads coming apart is the reason I try to pass an 18 wheeler as fast as possible. I hate when someone takes their sweet ass time to pass them. Even when I tried out trucking I couldn't stand someone taking their time passing me. It's messed up that this happened to you, but it's one of those "sh*t happens" kind of things where you were just in the wrong place in the wrong time. I see why you're mad so you want something to blame. Just have it fixed and move on.

Yea, definitely don't want to be beside one of those tires when one decides to blow out. Talk about loud too my God.

% of retread failures really doesn't matter to anyone other than the trucking company. Even a small % can equate to many many many failures. Pretty much every highway I am down I can count on coming across retread failures along the route every day.

Think of it like drunk drivers. A vast majority won't cause an accident but it still doesn't mean it should be allowed.

Ya you see retreads all the time but when you compare that too all of the commercial trucks with retreads that get replaced for wearing out the % is still low. Even lower when you look at any property damage, especially property damage to something other than the truck. Trust me, as hard as DOT is on commercial trucks and the drivers if it was really a problem then DOT wouldn't allow retreads at all.

Sorry that happened to your new truck.

I don't know about you but I can't keep a vehicle after it receives that much damage and a respray. Tough situation with such a new truck.

Sorry about your truck. I work for a compost company. And our trucks run re-treads. Drivers everyday before they leave check all tires for proper inflation. Never had a blow out or tire seperating. I'm not tire specialist but sounds like tire wasn't properly checked.

Thanks dude. It'll be fine. It's not that bad. No dents so it should need minimal filler. The paint it's going to get is much higher quality than OEM. I'm going to have it done at a custom hot rod shop where they do $50k paint jobs on concours level vehicles.

I wouldn't put that much faith in the DOT. They are susceptible to caving to industry pressure like every other agency. Any place that has tried to ban them has had industry lobbyist in full force.

That's exactly why they aren't allowed to run retreads on a steer axle. It's not a matter of if they throw the cap, it's when.

A job I used to have I delivered building materials and I drove a big Sterling with a 24' flatbed, tandem axles and a drop axle. The store always rain recaps for the rear axles and the 2 1/2 years I was there I never had one of them blow, but had them replaced from wear at least 10 separate trips to a heavy duty shop. Yes recaps have a bigger chance of blowing, but that doesn't mean they all blow out. Again I'll mention that I know everybody sees recaps pretty much everytime they get okn the interstate, but when you compare that # to all recaps on all commercial trucks it's still a very small % that blow out. As someone else said, either it was a bad recap (as in not recapped properly) or the tire wasn't inspected for damage or air pressure. Just because DOT requires a pre and post trip inspection, it doesn't mean every driver does it.
