Has anyone ever had Circle D rebuild a transmission specifically the 6L80? I was quoted a price of $5000 plus the price of a $500 converter to me this sounds crazy as hell ! This is me taking it out and delivering it to them and would be a two week turnaround WTF are they really that good with these transmissions?

That sounds pretty high, probably paying a lot for the name.....

Circle D is a top notch converter company from personal experience and many friends that have high horsepower LS powered cars. I am sure they know how to rebuild a transmission and from that price you must be getting some billet parts I would assume?

My 4L80E in in my racecar is probably $7,000 to $7,500 to build without a converter, but that includes a lot of billet pieces, a custom gear set, and other proprietary modifications done by the company that built it.

Long story short, are they capable yes, would I pay $5,000 grand for a stock rebuild? Absolutely not!!

Lots of special tool $$$$ to invest in these 6L transmissions...way more than a 4L60 or 80...

The only tools I have seen on all of the Youtube videos are the giant snap ring pliers and a giant worm clamp to center the pump. :dunno:

This is just a mild build up from stock street-strip so to speak. I did tell Patricia that this truck would not exceed 500HP at rear wheels with a future Magnacharger install, definitely not an all out race unit. None the less I won't be using them unless I win the lottery LOL. I think I will just do the Sonnax upgrades on the 1-2-3-4 piston, 3-4-5-R drum, 4-5-6 apply piston, Zip Kit, Tig weld the drums to the shafts and the pump slide spring basically $300 for parts. These items will do away with the 2-3 slip flare shift that these are notorious for and then the fast relearn for the TCM... Wish me luck :fingersx:

WOW... Ok thats is quite a bit of tools. I stand corrected but I did talk to a Builder today and his labor for 6L80's is $550 + my parts that includes installing new laminate disc on the solenoids and testing. Thanks 15HDriver

Upgrading the 6L80 with the Sonnax Upgrades does not need any special tools that I don't have. This will be a simple dis-assemble and replace of said parts above and some welding that I can do on the drums myself. I will be ordering parts in the near future and will document the install and pics will be added.

Please report back on how it goes! When you tig weld the drums do they need to be balanced?

I contacted Mike Kurtz @ Century Transmission about this and he said they haven't balanced them and didn't think they would need to be. Tig is more precise at making thin even welds. When I get done it will look like a continuous roll of nickles using my turntable. LOL!!

I suppose since the welds are close to the center so it won't affect rotating mass

I planned om doing the Sonnax uprades. The Circle D upgrade is aimed at guys that do a lot of racing. They basically turn the 6L80 into a 6L90 by the time they're done.

The parts i am ordering are as follows

1-2-3-4 piston

4-5-6 clutch apply piston

Line Booster valve

Zip Kit

Pump Slide spring

Switch repair kit if needed

ZR-1, CTSV Converter

And then re-tune from the stock calibrations the way i want it to feel
