Over 2000 lbs in bed leveled on bilstein 5100s...

Putting together a big fire pit on my property using boulders/rocks...I loaded the bed by hand w/ a friend & have had 30x50 lb bags of crushed stone in it before & judging from loading/unloading it & the amount of sag I'd say these boulders were definitely over the 1500 lbs of crushed stone previous and probably more like 2200 lbs

 

 

Truck did not seem to notice much at all, acceleration still good, ride improved on highway, and even on some rough rocky roads near a dirt-bike pit it still soaked everything up just fine...lets put it this way, 20 miles w/ that in the bed 15 highway and 5 on backroads & not 1 rock shifted or banged against the body....very secure ride.

 

 

My truck has stock wheels/tires (plan to add bigger/taller tires in future), bilstein 5100's @ max height, and rear blocks adding either 1" or 1.25" over stock (can't recall). Without the added height from the block kit I'm guessing it would've been dragging a$$ a bit.

 

Figured member would be interested in A) what a fully loaded up truck looked like w/ the bilstein 5100s, B) that it handled the payload w/ ease, and C) that the Bilstein shocks really shined/performed well under the conditions. Very happy w/ them.

Awesome, thanks for the info. What rear block did you put in? Do you have the Bilstein 5100 ride height adjustable in the front and the 5100's in the rear, too?

 

I'm wanting to go this route, but I've been concerned about being nose high when I tow or load up the bed (I bought a pickup for a reason!)

I would check your rear shocks after unloaded just to make sure you didn't bust them. I hauled about 2,800 pounds of gravel in my 2002 (never go to a rock query to get crushed stone, by from local dealer). It busted both shocks and cracked one leaf spring.

did the same thing with my 01 that i had, went to a rock quarry, had 2900lbs in the bed luckily only had to drive 3 miles on dirt roads home! truck didnt like that at all

Pardon the ignorance but, what do the billsteins have to do with the capacity the truck can handle for payload - is that not more the sole function of the leaf? The strut for the dampening motion.

 

The more I think of it, you have the bilsteins set at a height above stock, therefore they do take some load but again isn't this counter-productive and possibly damaging to the struts? The leaf should be doing this work, no?

Are the Blistein 5100s a rip and replace?

It is more a matter of once you level the truck is loses payload capacity. Once you start to put a load in the front end will raise which you do not want. These are designed to hold a payload remember so its less a matter of the truck not be level as the rear suspension is totally relaxed with no load.

 

So what he is saying is she took it like a champ but you would not want to do this every day.

 

* I would say adding a couple hundred pounds of fiberglass canopy plus wooden bedframe over the wheel wells and matteress in my truck bed lowered the bed a good 1/4 inch or more once I load up BBQ cooler and what not for a weekend out and slightly 'reverse' levels it.

I do have them in the rear as well, more showing what it looked like since I was @ or just over max payload and leveled w/ the bilstein shocks, Since I added taller rear blocks & also I imagine since the billies are stiffer than stock, my truck didn't experience the unwanted sagging rear end look & also rode fine. I wasn't driving far, long, or fast w/ this in the bed lol

    • I'm not sure if this should be a new topic, let me know if it's out of place. This my first post. Thanks 85077522 - AC Delco GM Genuine Parts Brake Master Cylinders. Anyone else had to replace this brake master cylinder yet. I didn't do any brake work, it looks like new parts and I've had the truck for about 4k miles, 119k total miles.  When it started to throw codes I did the calibrations with a bidirectional scanner and got the codes to clear but they came back so I did the routine; base bleed, automated bleed and final base bleed. All that with Bosch ES16-32N fluid (please look it up). That seemed to fix it but 100ish miles later it failed again so I ran the same process but with a pressure bleeder this time and got the same results, fixed for 100ish miles. The original fluid looked bad and I thought I got most of it out, it could've been the wrong fluid. The codes; P25A2, C05B0-00, C2A1B. I can get them to clear but not for long. The C05B0 indicates a leak in the front circuit (which is bone dry) so I'm thinking of doing the bleed process on that front again today and I don't know if that's taboo to just do the front but at this point it seems like it's worth the try anyway. The new master cylinder/module unit is supposed to get here today. But now I'm pretty much convinced this install is over my head. I've called several shops and some mobile guys that I know but this thing is like radio active material, scary wise. I did get 2 local shops say they should be able to do it, one says he has the SPS2 programing capability. And with the battery disconnected is there supposed to be pedal resistance, mine is to the floor, then if I pump it I can get some resistance. I had a panic stop prior to this issue which may have contributed from what I read. And on the first attempt to bleed and hydraulic test the scanner listed things to look for and one was any gaps between the pad and rotors which I did notice on the RF corner and I removed the outer pad (where the gap was) cleaned it and the hardware and didn't see a gap after that but will re-check it. I read that if pushing the caliper pistons back then you're supposed to open the bleeder so as to not push fluid backwards into the abs module or it will damage it. If that's true then that's also a possibility from the previous owner having the brakes changed before I got it. I'm using an XTool ip500 scanner. Any suggestions, questions and comments welcome. 
    • Next Friday will be my 6 week point from my right knee replacement.  The surgeon says it will be fine if I choose to drive after this checkup.  I know I could drive now but best to do as my surgeon (and my wife) tell me.  Richard compared being 62 to 72.  I remember when I was in my early 60's I was experiencing slow but regular decline in my mobility.  Thanks to good medical support,  i continued to fight the speed and spread of this decline. During my 60's I worked on non-surgical methods and just when I turned 70, my orthopedic surgeon recommended joint replacements.  In a little over a year, I had one shoulder and both knees replaced.  This hasn't been a terribly fun experience, but worth the discomfort as my future mobility health trajectory has reversed.  It is a treat to now be watching my mobility. balance and confidence steadily improve!
    • Grommets with the right cement should be perfectly fine. 
    • This is going to take allot of Assembly
