CAI Really worth it?

I'm about to add headers to my truck and wondering if the the CAI were really worth it on these new ltx engines. I could see maybe a new air tube from the air box to the throttle body but not sure about the benefit of a new filter or even an open air filter.

If I recall correctly, the most "gains" attained from intake options came from just replacing the tube with an Airraid MIT. That's what I did with the and kept the stock box. Looks clean. Any gains? I don't know. But when I put my headers on with the intake and straight-through muffler combo, really woke up.

Blackbear did a dyno study and found they all (multiple brands tested) showed gains. The number one was the airraid MIT (tube only). The topic is on the site, try doing a search

I have the tube only using the stock filter still. It cleans up the engine bay and it does give it a bit of a grunt.

It has been said again and again that the stock airbox is a great design and flows well. there are only two restrictive things on our intake. the tube which was built much more with noise dampening in mind than good flow and the air filter itself. replace the tub and swap in a high flow filter aka the Airaid kit and you will be great. I am very happy with mine

Why, what did you do?

He did what I would have done and bought a a CAI for nothing! How about dorp in filters that breath better any body like those?

What he said. I bought a K&N intake system as that is what I have done in the past. I could have saved some money for similar results it seems.

I did the MIT tube and AEM dry filter. Here is a pic of the filter next to the factory.

I have the M.I.T. tune with a stock filter. It seems to feel the same as the full K&N intake kit that I put on my '98. Doing that and now that I fill up with 89 octane gas it feels like it has better throttle response than when I first got the truck. When I bought the K&N for my '98 the main positive was the whole being able to go 50-100,000 miles between cleaning. Now paper filters that aren't anything special seem to be able to last close to 50,000 unless you drive in dusty conditions all the time. Also with just the tube and keeping the factory filter box it's completely enclosed and sealed to the inlet in the inner fender. Another plus is that the Airaid tube alone is way cheaper than a full out intake kit and you get about the same outcome.

Wow - look at of the filter area you are losing by going with that thin air filter!

That's why the stock filter is so thick - it has 10 times the surface filtering area. And flows as well if not better than aftermarket.

You'll get more bang for the buck by removing the stock air box - tasking the clip in defuser in there and trim out the middle - then trim the opening to the air box to match.

Stealth high flow air box - and it only takes 15 minutes and cost's nothing. You will be surprised at the results.

Can you elaborate? I'd like to do this.
