Mine came on instantly. I was coming down a spiral multi-story parking ramp, heard a pop and noticed the slop as soon as I got up to speed getting on the highway. Dealer mentioned something about the nut not being tightened to spec and that is what allowed it to go. Replaced the box (they pulled one off another truck on the lot since they were on 1-2 week order at the time. Haven't had issues since. Though it took a few visits for them to get my steering aligned.

Overall, I've very pleased with how my dealer handled the situation. I had a Ram with 6.4 Hemi previously and the thing clattered like an old diesel on cold startup. All the dealer (s) did was try to convince me (1) it's normal and (2) it's not making any abnormal sounds. Last straw was when I took a video in to show them and they still denied it. It was like trying to convince someone the earth is round... they just weren't buying it, despite the mountain of evidence.

The sloppy steering develops slowly and I think you adapt without consciously noticing it until it gets really bad. I could move the steering wheel from 10-2 without the wheels moving in any direction just prior to shipping the gear off.

My experience may differ from yours, but I think the issue started for me around 8000 miles, GM complied with the TSB "D" which advises to replace the pitman arm, which helped a little. Curiously the teeth on the pitman arm were worn in half and I wondered where the metal from the pitman arm teeth went...evidently, even after flushing the gear there was still metal contamination in the gear which exacerbates bearing wear.

GM said the slop was normal for 16's...

They just lost another customer...

I'm on here for a friend that doesn't own a computer & found this long thread for him.

He bought a brand new Flint built CC LTZ Duramax last fall & asked if I had crazy steering issues & I reported no problems with my Ft. Wayne built 15 HD gasser like he has. He is taking his to the dealer again tomorrow to have it looked at & have it checked. It was in a few months back for the same thing & they said it was air in the steering lines?

It has 23,000 miles on it now, I have since gave him what I found on here to show his dealer with the TSB. BTW his dealer has always treated him good.

Anyway, thanks again for all the great info & will keep you posted.

Add me to the list of steering issues. Went camping last weekend and since the wife uses the truck to go to work I had not been in it all week. Driving down the road I have about 2 inches of play to either side before you get the wheels to move. very un-nerving when pulling a camper. Goes to dealer on Friday. Only 4000 miles on her.Hope it stays together till then. Has anyone had a total loss of steering?

Make sure to hand them PIT5501E and ask if there is an PIT5501F.

I read a lot of this thread, and although I do not believe I have the problem I do notice more play in the wheel than my 1500 did. Considering the suspension and geometry is different this doesn't surprise me.

My question is....

Has anyone had this issue on a truck other than a crew cab and or not built in Flint?

Sorry if this has been covered already.

FYI. Mine is a 2015 Z/71 gas ext cab short bed 2500 Ft Wayne built. No steering problems 23,000 miles.

Off camber, its a 6.0 gasser. They replaced the steering box. I pick it up tomorrow. We'll see how it drives.

Just took my 2016 2500 with 9,500 miles to the dealership today with the same issue, as soon as I told them what the problem was they already knew what was causing it. They had to order a whole new gear box so at least they are replacing and not just fixing. They said they have done 3 or 4 of these already.

You ain't kidding about un-nerving while pulling a camper. I bought this truck specifically to pull my camper and the first time I did it felt like it was all over the road. Just took mine to the dealership today, will have to wait on the part but hopefully will be fixed before our next trip in two weeks cause I'm not pulling a camper 5 hours like that.

I do believe that the 6.0 gas truck did not come with the assisted steering. Only the diesels. Does anyone on here have a gas truck with this problem? Thank.s

    • Yep, just a quick reference point.    My main point being I’d do a thousand other things before I’d pay 10k for a transmission.    Speaking in ignorance cause I don’t look at these trucks, what is it worth? 20k?
    • I think users are going to want to pick their monitored parameters, which parameters they want to see first.    It should probably start with baseline at a minimum and adjust to learned, but be able to overlay baseline for comparison.   A simple severity level would be able to determine what type of alerting is appropriate or user selectable.    Why not use the OBD port though?   I think a phone connection would be a good idea, push notifications type deal.   Number 1 issue is having data is useless if you don’t know what the data should be under normal conditions.
    • I thought I would use your thread and add to it as I just did my first longer drive with my truck in the last couple of days. I drove from the Grande Prairie area of Alberta down to Edmonton and most of where I drove in the city was the ring road so fairly free flowing but a bit of stop and go as well in the city. Stayed the night and returned home and not too many stops along the way each way but every restart and certainly every cold start sets it back for fuel mileage. Why I say that is I see some people will cherry pick a fuel mileage leg after the vehicle had been warmed up driveline wise before hand and its a forgiving ( easy rolling drive leg for example ) and call that their fuel mileage which can give a false perception of reality. I was not heavily loaded at all but never the less the flip bak cover, rubber bed mat, various tools etc and extra jerry cans of fuel all way up to a few hundred pounds of dead weight so its not an empty truck. The cold inflation tire pressures are set more near the freezing point so once they are warmed up driving I was showing 45 front and over 40 rear and realize high inflation pressures would help a little in fuel mileage but certainly not the ride on our crap sections of highway. The weather was good so was not raining as that can really drag mileage down, in fact I had a bit of a tail wind on average driving home. Most people on here would never have driven on that freeway to visualize it but its got a fair bit of rolling type of landscape with numerous river valleys. For the most part I had it on cruise set to 62 although kicking it off if I caught it in time before it started down shifting and self braking going down the grades. Most of the more substantial grades its shifting into 7th I believe as 8th just doesn't have it. Total distance round trip was 643 miles and my overall average and I did refuel three times in all, figured out to 17.65 miles per US gallon. My best fuel mileage section refuel within all of this figured out to 18.46 and these are all hand calculated figures. I find if anything that the trucks computer can be over optimistic, sometimes its pretty close but other times its stretching it. On paper persay in theory the truck would have just about made it on fumes for that whole drive without refueling once.    Which made me think of the topic thread of the wonder if these trucks could do 20 mpg and that is a good question, certainly would have to be on an easy going flat highway, no head wind, the right temperature, not packing around a bunch of dead weight and puttering along even slower than I was I would suspect and going steady and not stopping to smell the flowers or take a piss !. It probably is possible but not without effort to attain that with the wind resistance and weight of these trucks. Of course on my drive most people are passing me if they have the power as per loaded highway tractors, never mind a lot of speedy vehicles but the speed limit is 68 and most are at or well over that.
    • Monday looks like a good day for the dealer to test an ac issue. Hopefully it all turns out good.
