Tail Light Swap - LTZ to SLT

I've seen a few threads about people wanting 2016 SLT tail lights on an SLE or 2016 LTZ tail lights on an LT, but what about swapping from LTZ to SLT or vice versa? On a Colorado / Canyon forum, there's a thread for people to swap with each other when a Chevy guy wants GMC tails, etc.

I would think that the 2016 LED versions would be swappable, and that the non-LED would be swappable as well. I'm more of a fan of the Chevy LED tail lights without the chrome details on the GMCs. Too bad the dealership probably wouldn't have any interest in swapping for me when I pick up my new truck next weekend.

Edit:

I believe these are the correct part numbers for reference.

GMC Sierra: 84039199, 84039200

Chevrolet Silverado: 84023036, 84023037

Now this is interesting, I actually like the higher end chevy tail lights like the ones on my buddy's high country. Would be cool if I could replace the boring sle ones with those

PS trust me if the dealership can make money, they're interested...

Yeah, if an LTZ tail light will fit an SLT, and and SLT light can work on SLE (other threads are working on this), then you'd be in business.

Oh I'm sure a Chevy dealer would sell me LTZ tail lights, but I don't want to do that unless it were nearly a straight trade or I could turn around and sell my SLT lights privately for nearly the same price.

I would start with the basics then to make sure you have the least issues. Make sure the screw holes match (silver-->Sierra) of the rest is wiring. That's not the worst issue to run into. You might need resistor or diode if you are going from halogen to led. I'm surprised that the trucks weren't all wired the same instead of having so many variations. It's a six sigma nightmare.

Chevy and GMC taillights are different shape....will not fit.

This. There are other threads around showing how they are slightly different dimensions so you can't swap between Sierra and Silverado.

2007-2013 had the same 'issue'

The 2014 + sierra tailight lenses are flat at the bottom and ~30 degree tapered on top.

2014+ silverado are ~30 degree tapered on both top and bottom.

Thanks for the clarification - saved me from waiting a week and a half to compare my self.
