G80 install

going to switch my one wheel peel to a g80 this weekend. i have the new carrier, there is a square medal block in the middle of it. is this for holding the gears in place for shipping, do i remove it after it is installed

I have the G-80 we call them G-Bombs, I would install a trutrac over the G80 anyday but I am very limited with my 9.76 rearend so the stock locker stays for now. Post a pic, the block is to hold the spiders and C rings in place and not allow axle travel inwards.

G-80's are slow speed lockers, they are not for going off road with any speed.

Never had an issue with the g80. Excellant cheap and simple upgrade if you're not building an off road rig

The G80 in my '98 didn't hold up too well, but I also dogged the hell out of it on and off-road including a bunch of burnouts. The G80 did however save me a couple of times in the '98 when I thought I was stuck in a mudhole, but it helped get me out. The best help was in a mudhole deep enough to where the water was literally to the top of my bumpers (was only leveled) and had water coming into the cab. I eventually was about to rock it back and forth and got out of the hole with no help.

I hope the G80 in my '14 is at least stronger even though I don't plan on doing anything in it like I did my '98.

I do suggest that if you plan on making it a real off-roader I would put some other locker in and not the G80. G80s are good for daily drivers, but not for serious off-roading.

not an off roader, but do go down some muddy logging roads when hunting. most of the time it is a daily driver. it is dumb that in Canada if you are on even a skiff of snow you have to use 4 wheel drive because of the one wheel peel. I guess I will assume it is a spacer block for shipping and remove it

Yeah carrier swaps aren't the easiest thing in the world..... they usually aren't bad but that's provided your original shims are good to keep the contact pattern on the gears the way it was.

lol I rebuild rear end and transmissions for class 8 trucks, this was really quite easy. after spending many hours on the internet it looks like the medal block stays in the carrier. over 500 klms this weekend and everything seems fine
