Waterproof/resistant bed

Hi Everyone,

 

I have a 2016 sierra 1500 with a Lear canopy and spray in bed liner. I keep samples and other fairly valuable items in the bed. These items really shouldn't get wet very often if at all. Mostly they are kept in bags and tubs but not always. I like to wash my truck, I live in the rainy PNW and occasionally I like to take my truck out for some muddy 4x4 fun. I'd like to keep the bed as dry as possible. I've searched on here to no luck. Can someone point me to a good tutorial/product or thread?

Sounds like you're a medical sales rep or CSR. In all honesty I would buy one of the bed mats. Then you can either use it for fun and remove it for your product tubs or in reverse for a clean floor for your tubs.

They have a thick vinyl one and heavy rug feeling one. Personally I would take it out when you go mudding, then lay it down for a clean surface when you are civilized.

 

But I think I misread your post, you just want to make your leer cap more water resistant. In which case I would just use use weather stripping between the bed and cap.

If your cap is installed and sealed correctly you should not have any water issues. I have a cheap 200.00 soft tonneau cover and have been through some pretty torrential ran and I only get a little water around the sides of the tailgate which goes right under the bedrug and to the front drains.

 

Using a bedrug may let the water drain out of the top surface and keep what you have in there drier, just like the plastic mesh in a boat ski locker. I have two cardboard boxes in the bed for over a year and neither has ever been wet so as long as the top is sealed properly you should be OK.

I bought a Peragon folding bed cover recently and use a DeeZee rubber mat on the floor of the bed over my factory sprayed in liner. Leaking was not a big factor for me as i keep all my "must be dry" parts and pieces in a plastic tub. Yes the peragon does leak as most flat surface inside the bed covers do. perhaps a bed Cap would work better for your purposes? ARE makes some good products.

Thanks for all of the responses. It's clear that I didn't explain well what I've got going on. I've got a line x bed liner with plastic caps and a Lear canopy 100xl (topper, not tonneau) installed. However in these trucks the tailgate and other areas of the bed have holes that will allow water in. I'd like to get those sealed off in some way. I'm not worried about the topper or topper/bed interface leaking.

I'd think making a truck tailgate completely water tight is going to be tough. If your "stuff" is valuable, I'd stick with being sure it is in a water tight container.

You could maybe retrofit the seals from the Tahoe lift gate to fit the tailgate.

Actually, I know there are caps that have lockable doors that replace the tailgate. Does Lear have a retrofit kit for your canopy?
