Holy rail dust, batman!

Ok so usually I keep my vehicles clean. I hate climbing into a car and seeing dirt and crumbs everywhere, dirty on the outside, etc. Even though my truck is "just a truck"... I paid enough for it, I want it to remain nice. :)

Now I bought my 2015 Sierra SLT way back on Black Friday of 2014. It was already winter so I figured it'd get a good exterior "deep clean" in the spring. I am ashamed to admit that I did not get to it last year... so other than 1-2 hand washes, most of it's cleaning took place at the auto car wash :(

I didn't want to run the truck through a THIRD winter without giving it a good clean and some paint protection, so I spent yesterday cleaning it.

One advantage to waiting so long... easy to spot the rail dust. Chicago winters made the rail dust start to rust. And HOLY COW there is a LOT of it!!! Once I got up close to the paint, sheezus... specks of orange EVERYWHERE. Easy to spot being my truck is Summit White.

I spent a good 7 hours yesterday with the claybar... never before have I completely burned up a claybar like that. Not only was the paint filthy, but MAN I can't get over the rail dust all over that thing. I spent over an hour on the tailgate! Every few inches, another spec. Ugh.

Wound up running out of daylight - but at least the paint is now CLEAN. The white REALLY pops now. Even my wife noticed... so it definitely needed it.

Truck parked in the garage now. It'll get a good coat of sealant (Rejex) tonight.

Yeah. I need to tackle the interior next. The front seats are actually pretty clean overall.

The BACK seat, where my son sits.... ugh. :( "How did he get footprints THERE?!"

I had summit white before my new truck. I know what you mean about the Orange specs. A friend of mine who details cars told me easy bake oven cleaner will take it off and not hurt the paint. I sold the truck before I tried it,so not sure if it works. According to him it works.

I feel you on the "dirty truck" deal. I cannot stand it, OCD I guess. The first chance I got I clayed, sealed, and waxed my 2016. Rain just slides right off, it's great. Much easier to keep clean as well.

On another note, I just spent the last 3 full days on my wife's "new" Traverse. It was a program vehicle and it wash trashed! Fine scratches all over it. Looked like someone drove it through hedges, just terrible. It's much better now but still needs some more paint correction time.

End rant

Yeah I can't believe I made it this long. I have a few other cars that I keep after (heavily) and the truck just got away from me. Every time I had the chance (time + good weather + ambition) I'd tackle one of the other cars instead.

' It'll get a good coat of sealant (Rejex) tonight.' - Really good product that Rejex. I've done my Subaru Outback and my 2014 Silverado.

It is AWESOME. I swear by it now. Learned about it when I attended this little "how to" detailing seminar at a shop when I lived in Seattle through the Audi club. Guy out there was the guy that detailed all the exotics for the Microsoft employees. He swore by it.

Stuff works great. Lasts a LONG time. And is SUPER glossy. If you haven't used it on a black car you're missing out!

I am spoiled, my 1500 got washed at least once a week at the car wash. Since I have a monthly pass, it pays for itself. I will do the same for the 2500.

But how old are your kids now? If old enough, put them to work, let them help you wash the truck. It puts the food in their mouths and a roof over their head, it is the least they can do. It instills a work ethic in their lives. Plus once they learn to drive at bare minimum , the "rent" for use is washing it.

Adams wheel cleaner works great for removing rail dust ( iron ). I think it gets diluted 1:1. but check Adams web site. They have videos for there products.

I thought of this. Lol. Automatic car washes are a no no.

This is too funny...we have so many company vehicles that look just like this, due to the automatic car wash.

I'd never.

I see this all the time, it isn't always "rail dust" anymore. With some of the aggressive brake pads the manufactures run on some vehicles you also now get brake remenants embedding into the paint that start to rust once some salt from the winter months get on the paint. I try to clay bar the vehicles twice a year and wax them at least 2-3 times per year, always try to get them done before the first winter storm hits for sure.

For the record, NO brushes have EVER touched my truck. It is a hand car wash. It is still a "tunnel" set up, with the soap, rinse and blower, but the actual wash is done by hand. There is a team of pre-wash, then it is soaped, wash team, rinsed, and blow machine. But then there is a dry team, before you turn into the bays for the inside to be done.

They all know me there since I am there so much. They also know that I give a good tip, but I will inspect it beforehand. The pre-team knows to fold my mirror on the passenger side ( I do the one on the driver's side) This place has the whole gamut of cars. I have seen clunkers, everyday cars, to Jags, Corvettes Ferraris, and even a Silver Shadow.

    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
    • Correct.  2019-2021 model years are serviced by a different p/n.  19420611.  Recall 2021s use 19420611.   The recall engines 2022-2024 model years are serviced with 12740076.     The difference between 19420611 and 12740076 is GM changed injector size for 2022.  The injectors are smaller on 12740076 with smaller injector bores in the cylinder heads to match the smaller injectors.  So you can't install a 19420611 in a 2022-2024, and you can't install a 12740076 in a 2019-2021.     Both engines are the replacement engine p/ns that are in the L87 recall.  So both of these are the updated engines.     Here's a version of the L87 recall with the p/ns for all the parts needed.    RCRIT-25V274-7075.pdf   Note it shows 19420611 and 12740076 with an asterisk to a footnote "Use the VIN and the GM Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) to determine which part to order if two or more part numbers are listed for the same part, as it may vary by vehicle options."
    • Looking for advice from this group. Took my flawless 2020 6.2 TB to an unnamed shop for routine rear brakes and oil change. Tech forgot to put oil back in after the full service and needles to say, destroyed my engine.  It’s all on their shop video so they are responsible.   I had my Chevy dealer do the analysis and they confirmed its compromised and said engine replacement. The manager said they only get GM reman engines from GM with full 3 yr warranty and the one they would put in is not same as what’s they are swapping out on 21-25 for recall.    I am looking for advice why that would be a different engine because obviously I had the good 6.2 year and replacing it has my concerns with that recall for 21-15   Also what’s the pros and cons of accepting the engine swap vs telling the shop that bricked the truck to pay up so I buy a new truck. I’m concerned about stigma resale eventually if I just decide to get rid of it after the swap or other issues showing up after the swap out.
    • Just looked up my records.  I've never gone over 5000 miles between oil changes.  At 46K miles, I have 10 oil changes.  I hope that will help.  I also installed the disabler last year.  I've still had a few times when it didn't seem to engage (which I can tell because the start stop feature kicks in), but for the most part, I think it's working.  For some reason, GM did not include the number of cylinders running in the information screen like I had on other models.  In my Cadillac, it shows me when it's running on 4 cylinders on the fuel milage screen.  I can't find that on my '21 Denali.
