Dumb mistake when towing. Sierra

If you lock out gears or manually downshift when towing you don't have really need tow haul. Dad and grandfather never really used it much when we used to tow our travel trailers. I use tow haul more in traffic empty than I do towing but I do light load towing. If you smell something then it's definitely not from not using tow haul.

This is completely opposite of the purpose of the tow haul mode, and is wrong advice. The increased line pressures produced while using this function is what will make the transmission last longer under tow use. By changing the shift points, it keeps the engine in its power band for increased performance.

A bunch of us on here were towing before there was such a thing as "tow/haul" mode and did just fine. It is probably the truck burning of oils and plastics on the engine and exhaust. My truck did it for the first few thousand miles. My Jeep did it for almost 8k miles before the smells went away.

There are a number of responses indicating this smell is normal. This could be right but it sounds that you are concerned that it may be abnormal. We are all basing our opinions on what information you have provided. "Smell" is a broad diagnosis and I would not take comfort from an internet solution. At the very least, let your dealer tell you this is "normal" so that you have a paper trail when/if something more serious needs warranty repair. I have had the privilege of owning a few new vehicles in my life and I would certainly have a new smell at 800 miles checked out.

And a bunch of us on here grew up with out cell phones and did just fine... doesn't mean that the new stuff isn't better. There was a reason us guys that were towing before tow/haul were putting in trans shift kits... increase line pressures, hold the shifts longer and firm up the shifts... sounds familiar to the tow/haul features don't it [emoji6]
