Selling GMC Sierra

Where is the best place to sell a truck? My truck is a 2015 Sierra WT. The dealer wants to give me 18k as a trade, but this seems low. I figured I could get more if I sold it on Craigslist, but I don't want to end up "dead in a pond" like one article I was reading online was talking about. Has anyone had experience with selling a vehicle privately?

+1 on Carmax. Unfortunately for you, WTs dont get the best on trade in and resale. You're better off selling outright. If you sell on CL, be smart, don't meet someone in a dark alley and at night, you'll be fine

WT is base model, work truck.

You can usually get more privately. If you go that route do keep in mind there is leg work involved. You can always post an ad and see what happens but I suggest you plan to have people look at it on same day you do not want to be having every yahoo come every 2nd day, running 20 minutes late wasting all your free time. Also every single person will try to lowball you. People treat prices on CL like a suggestion and always say 'i like it but only have this much whether its a toaster or a truck'. So having multiple people looking means they are now bidding against each other.

Keep the sales tax in mind. If you trade, you won't pay sales tax on the part of the new truck purchase that was paid with the trade in. If you sell outright, you'll pay sales tax on the entire cost of the new truck. So, if you sell outright, you need to get as much as the trade in offer plus the sales tax just to break even. That's how it works where I live. It might be different for you.

I have bought and sold many things on Craigslist. You will have some low ballers and some scammers but if you are smart about it and price it right there is no reason not to try it out. What will you be replacing it with?

If you go craigslist most local police stations allow transactions in their parking lot for added safety for buyer and seller. In texas we are suggested to remove the plates and have a temp tag printed online. Also make sure you have any and all paper work your state needs to sell/buy a vehicle. I do this at least once a year and have no issues. There will be people that waste your time but if the dealer is really low balling the extra money is worth it.

As mentioned before too sales tax can make a difference. In tx it is 6.25%. So $18kX.0625=$1,125. It equalls selling out right for $18,125. Keep that in mind.

I don't like Craig's list either. I put my 06 out for sale the old fashion way..a couple for sale signs. Got lucky sold it first day I put it out.

My math says the total should be $19,125.

I'd go by carmax and see what they'll lowball you with. Then put up an ad on Craiglist and see what interest you get.

Thanks everyone for the replies! I am looking at some 2016 Silverado LTs or Sierra SLEs. I am mainly looking for a v8, crew cab, and something with Bluetooth. I went to Carmax, but the wait time was 45 mins and they would I guess have to buy it outright and not put it on the lot (or something like that) because it has suspension mods (leveling kit). Should I use a different name when selling on Craigslist? Is there anyway to make it sell fast, like before the end of the month? Chevy dealership in Houston has 25% off crew cabs till the 31st.

Craigslist will allow you to remain nameless if you would like. They create their own unique email address and a lot of times, unless otherwise stated that is all you see from someone. So you may get an email from sally smith with her email address on it but your return email will be a whole bunch of numbers and letters etc. My advice though is do not allow for emails and only allow calls. This will cut out half the tire kickers and spammers who wont call you.

I just sold my 2013 Cruze on a local Facebook buy-sell-trade group. Sold it in one day. Had two buyers that wanted it too, both with cash in hand. Give that shot before Craigslist, if you have Facebook.

If you do the Craigslist route, make damn sure that you do not take any kind of cashiers/certified checks. Tons of scammers if you don't know what to look for.
