I sell a lot of items privately but gave up selling my vehicles this way many years ago. I have found that negotiating a deal on a new vehicle with a trade-in much less stressful and risky. Having a low risk tolerance may cost me money, but I sleep better!

If you go craigslist most local police stations allow transactions in their parking lot for added safety for buyer and seller. In texas we are suggested to remove the plates and have a temp tag printed online. Also make sure you have any and all paper work your state needs to sell/buy a vehicle. I do this at least once a year and have no issues. There will be people that waste your time but if the dealer is really low balling the extra money is worth it.

As mentioned before too sales tax can make a difference. In tx it is 6.25%. So $18kX.0625=$1,125. It equalls selling out right for $18,125. Keep that in mind.

19,125

If you sell privately like craiglist or ebay Bank wire transfer or cash would be the only two payments I would take.

Put "For Sale" signs in your front, sides and back windows - then go drive around car lots. I sold two of my cars that way and if I ever decide to sell this truck, I will go that route again - it worked for me any way!

I just recently sold my 06 duramax privately for $25,500 on craigslist and here is how I handled it and everything went very smooth and easy. I had the guy meet me at a public place (actually parking lot at the plant I work at) immediately could tell the guy wasnt a dirtbag so I allowed a test drive which I road along. We came to terms on the truck, I asked for no money to hold it so if it did fall thru I didnt have to try and meet up again to give it back or go thru any issues there. A couple days later he had everything ready to go for funding, I met him at his bank he gave me $6000 cash in the parking lot and then we went inside where he finalized his loan and the bank loan officer handed me the check for the remaining $19500. By going thru the trouble of going to the bank with him to finalize the loan I eliminated the risk of getting a bad check all together and the bank was happy because I signed the title over to them directly.

$18k doesn't sound too bad to me. My dealer is selling brand new work trucks for less than $22k.

I've sold stuff to Carmax and it was an easy process. It would be better to put the truck back to stock and sell the accessories separately. If you do sell to Carmax don't let the first offer time out. If you go back a second time they will reduce their first offer by a lot.

What kind of trucks? I have never seen them under 26k and I am aggressively searching chevy and gmc dealerships. Most 2016s have large rebates (some up to 10k) but these huge ones don't apply to regular cabs and WT.

The guy above said he sold his 06 for 25k which is what I was kinda looking for. Might be high, but most SLEs on Craigslist are going for upper 20s and low 30s and my truck is in much better condition than 50%. What do y'all think?

Don't be a jerk about what I'm wanting to get for it. If you don't have something productive to add to the page please leave it off. I added a few pics so y'all can see what I'm dealing with.

What does edmunds.com or any of the other online sites put your truck value at? Your truck does look very clean and in excellent condition. I think you're a victim of trying to get rid of a WT which is at the lower end of the market. The volume seller is the LT and SLE which has the big rebates going now which is what is hurting your resale value. Second dealers can get WTs all day long from auctions and fleet turn ins for less that what you want trade in. If you want to trade up, you might have to be willing to take it in the shorts.

So Edmonds puts my "trade in" value at 20,755 which is very close to KBB. If I do private party they say it's worth 22,625. I was just kinda rounding up to 25k. Seems like that's not out of reach, but that just may be me.

Theres nothing stopping you from listing your truck for $25K and seeing if someone bites, maybe they offer you $23K? In any regards, it will be well worth selling it outright for $22K-$25K than trading it in for $18K the even with sales tax factored in. Really your truck is only worth what soneobe is willing to pay, not a figure printed online or in a book. As I've already said, WTs dont command high resales like higher trimmed trucks because their margin for profit are lower to begin with when you bought it brand new. The good thing is you don't "need" a new truck based on what you told us, so you have the luxury of waiting on getting a good deal both trading/selling and buying new. Don't let the idea of end of year sales means you "need" to buy a new truck now or you wont get a goid deal. GM was outsold by Ram last month, so figure GM will dump money down on the hood to increase sales overall, plus truck sales as a whole have slowed down the past couple of months. Many people have got 20% off during the sales year by being patient and insistent with the dealership when negotiating.
