Selling GMC Sierra

So Edmonds puts my "trade in" value at 20,755 which is very close to KBB. If I do private party they say it's worth 22,625. I was just kinda rounding up to 25k. Seems like that's not out of reach, but that just may be me.

It really depends on the dealer. I went to a few of the big dealers a few towns away to trade in my Camry for an LT with the 20% off deal. My Camry was upside down a little, but I insisted that I wouldn't take a hit on it to trade.

Well, everyone just told me to get lost until I got to a dealer I usually avoid. Everyone else had been offering me 16.5 for my car, but when I walked in here, they threw 19 on the table right away. In the end, I got 20.5k.

What really happened was they put the discount they might have negotiated off the truck toward my trade. I got the 20% but nothing else off the truck according to the paperwork. Really, they took off 4K.

I only tell you this because I had never heard of Laura GM until after I bought my truck and joined the forum. I felt like I had gotten a great deal, and I don't feel like it was a bad deal, it just wasn't the best I could have gotten. Hindsight is 20/20.

Go in and see what they'll do on the price. If they don't give it to you on your trade, see if they'll take it off the truck. As long as the numbers aren't too crazy, they'll probably do it one way or another. They're gonna make their money.

Could you possibly get just a little more selling somewhere else? Sure. Will you have to work for it? Definitely. Make sure your time is worth it. You also don't want the last 16 with the options you wanted to drive off the lot without you while some Craigslist guy is dicking around "getting his financing set up"

Sorry for the novel, good luck getting the truck you want in your driveway.

Ask them if you finance with them for a high rate and long term can you get more for your trade? You would ask this because a lot of times they get kickbacks from the banks and that kickback to them could just make the numbers work for you. For example, I could not get more that $29,000 for my Audi S4 when I was looking to buy a truck. I searched and search and everyone was right around that price. I found a dealer that told me they would give me $35,500 for it but I had to finance through them. They were getting a kickback and it made the numbers work. The most important thing in that is, if they bite, you need to refinance that deal a few months after getting it as you do not want to be paying 5% for 7 years. Just a thought!

Yes you can probably do better than the 18 on trade but out right selling for 25 just is not going to happen if book values are 22ish. No one rounds up 2-3k. That is nuts. Plus loaning institutions typically won't loan over value so the buyer would have to have the extra cash on top of a full value loan. I agree your truck is cleaner than the average wt but nothing makes it worth an extra 2-3k. Sorry. When i want to move something quickly as a private seller it is usually for 500-1k under book private sell and 500-1k over trade.

My comment about the new WT going for less than $22k is for a regular cab. I didn't see your profile that you have a double cab, so it's not apples-apples. Here is the ad I was talking about.

Some really good advice on this topic. When trading in on a new vehicle, it is pretty easy to get a reasonable value for your trade-in. You will find that the important figure is the difference in price between your trade and the new vehicle. The dealer that is giving you a great price on your trade may not be giving you the best price on your new vehicle choice. On my last purchase, I shopped at three dealerships for similarly equipped trucks. Trade-in price varied but the cost to purchase difference was pretty similar. The ideal situation we all believe is to sell our vehicle privately for a higher price and use the cash to buy a new vehicle at a lower price. It has been my experience that when I factor in the risks, hassles, tax costs and time, "trading-in" is my preferred purchasing method.

I have to agree with what was said above. You do have a really clean truck. However everyone that is looking for a truck like you is probably doing their homework as well. (looking at edmunds and such) so they know the value of the truck. I seriously doubt that you will find someone willing to pay over what those sites say is a fair price. List it on Craigslist and put some For Sale signs in the windows as you drive around. You will get people interested and then you can make the decision to sell it outright or trade it in.

I don't go by trade in value, I deal with a large dealer that has lots of use cars and trucks. I look for what there are selling them for. Then I look for what there are running deals on. I know they are in it to make money but 3K or more each way, no way. When I traded my 14 GMC I got even money on it and 10K off the 15 Santa Fe I bought at .5 per cent interest. I do business with this dealer about every two years and they sell both brands. I been buying from them for years because they treat me right. I have at times put cars on sell your car lots and done well but you have to factor in the taxes you'll pay on a full purchase without trade.

Do y'all think a bigger dealership will give me a better trade? The one I went to was a smaller one. They only sell trucks and their stock can't be over 100 vehicles. I know a dealership in Houston has crew cabs for 25% off, but I don't want to drive down there just for them to give me the same trade in.

Look online and compare, check weisner in Conroe, that's who I deal with. Again look online to see retail on use trucks and be armed with info. You have all the dealers within a mile of each other there, good deals to be had.

That's actually where I bought it. [emoji23] I like them, but right now the chevy dealership is having better deals. I may jut wait until like Jan when they all have very few 2016s left. Do y'all think there will be some better deals then? I would think there would be but who knows.

Key is to be paying cash so that they cannot pull their financing/leasing tricks on you. Just about all reputable dealers now have an internet sales department. When these guys find out your are serious and paying cash you will have their undivided attention. Narrow it down to 2 or 3 dealers that you want to work with and see which one gives you the best deal before making a site visit. No need for spending hour upon hour in a dealership, that just entertains the fat belly salesmen. LOL

I cannot tell you how many times a sales person has told me that I MUST be joking when I told them where I wanted to be on my out the door price. Persistence and research pays off in big dollars.

    • I'm not sure if this should be a new topic, let me know if it's out of place. This my first post. Thanks 85077522 - AC Delco GM Genuine Parts Brake Master Cylinders. Anyone else had to replace this brake master cylinder yet. I didn't do any brake work, it looks like new parts and I've had the truck for about 4k miles, 119k total miles.  When it started to throw codes I did the calibrations with a bidirectional scanner and got the codes to clear but they came back so I did the routine; base bleed, automated bleed and final base bleed. All that with Bosch ES16-32N fluid (please look it up). That seemed to fix it but 100ish miles later it failed again so I ran the same process but with a pressure bleeder this time and got the same results, fixed for 100ish miles. The original fluid looked bad and I thought I got most of it out, it could've been the wrong fluid. The codes; P25A2, C05B0-00, C2A1B. I can get them to clear but not for long. The C05B0 indicates a leak in the front circuit (which is bone dry) so I'm thinking of doing the bleed process on that front again today and I don't know if that's taboo to just do the front but at this point it seems like it's worth the try anyway. The new master cylinder/module unit is supposed to get here today. But now I'm pretty much convinced this install is over my head. I've called several shops and some mobile guys that I know but this thing is like radio active material, scary wise. I did get 2 local shops say they should be able to do it, one says he has the SPS2 programing capability. And with the battery disconnected is there supposed to be pedal resistance, mine is to the floor, then if I pump it I can get some resistance. I had a panic stop prior to this issue which may have contributed from what I read. And on the first attempt to bleed and hydraulic test the scanner listed things to look for and one was any gaps between the pad and rotors which I did notice on the RF corner and I removed the outer pad (where the gap was) cleaned it and the hardware and didn't see a gap after that but will re-check it. I read that if pushing the caliper pistons back then you're supposed to open the bleeder so as to not push fluid backwards into the abs module or it will damage it. If that's true then that's also a possibility from the previous owner having the brakes changed before I got it. I'm using an XTool ip500 scanner. Any suggestions, questions and comments welcome.
    • Next Friday will be my 6 week point from my right knee replacement.  The surgeon says it will be fine if I choose to drive after this checkup.  I know I could drive now but best to do as my surgeon (and my wife) tell me.  Richard compared being 62 to 72.  I remember when I was in my early 60's I was experiencing slow but regular decline in my mobility.  Thanks to good medical support,  i continued to fight the speed and spread of this decline. During my 60's I worked on non-surgical methods and just when I turned 70, my orthopedic surgeon recommended joint replacements.  In a little over a year, I had one shoulder and both knees replaced.  This hasn't been a terribly fun experience, but worth the discomfort as my future mobility health trajectory has reversed.  It is a treat to now be watching my mobility. balance and confidence steadily improve!
