Parking brake cable?

Recommended Posts

I was replacing the rear shocks on my 2003 Silverado today, and I noticed this line where the casing had been split in multiple places, and it was starting to rust. It looks like the parking brake cable. I'm just wanting someone to confirm that. I'm pretty sure it's not the brake line. That looks smaller and appears to be okay. If it's the parking brake, then it's not something I need to worry about immediately.

Thanks

That is indeed the parking brake cable.

Looks pretty much like it should be replaced. I would not be suprised if used, that cable would stick.

Thanks for the responses. Replacing the parking brake cable doesn't bother me, but I don't want to have to tear into the brake and transmission lines. It's certainly a lot more rusty under there than I would expect, even for a 13 year old truck. I'm thinking I should just sell it and get something else.

GM got the planned obsolescence thing right in the rust belt. My '99 siverado is 100% sound drive train wise at 300k miles. But, after 17 Michigan/Ohio winters, I have had to replace every hard line on the truck as well as repair the frame.

Keeping one of these aging trucks on the road in areas that use salt/brine in the winter is going to require rust repair.
