did you stage that pic by putting dirt on that filter? haha that is disgusting

Nope! I was surprised with the fuzz that was piled up in that corner. I clearly need to do this every 10k miles (or less), instead of every 15-17k.

 

When I pulled out the filter, a leaf fell off the back of the filter and down into the blower motor. I didn't realize it until I fired the fan up full blast and it started making a buzzing sound. Had to pull the new filter back out, and wedge my hand in there and pull it out. I was lucky I didn't have to take the blower motor out just to get it.

Haha, yeah I reread some of the posts here, and my idea of how leaves get into and on the cabin air filter was quite wrong. I pictured a vehicle sitting outside somehow being more prone to crap falling in,, but that isn't how that works lol.

Its all good, just playin.

So I took a video scope under the window under the hood of my truck and found that there is absolutely nothing to prevent a mouse from getting inside and into the filter which they can easily eat through. So within the next week I'm going to dismantle and fix a screen to prevent it any mice or large leaves from getting into the cabin. I'll take some pictures and videos and post them

So I took a video scope under the window under the hood of my truck and found that there is absolutely nothing to prevent a mouse from getting inside and into the filter which they can easily eat through. So within the next week I'm going to dismantle and fix a screen to prevent it any mice or large leaves from getting into the cabin. I'll take some pictures and videos and post them

That's probably the only part I am concerned about. I have an IPA Air Comb which is like a long blow gun with sideways air pressure which i should be able to get in there and place enough pressure to dislodge any leaves etc. Ultimately, if i had too i'll hard plumb an air hose with a quick disconnect...that i can hook onto periodically. Anything would be better than the alternative....

After reading these posts I decided to check mine truck seeing as we spent last summer in CT where the truck was parked outside. Sure as hell, the filter was full of crap along with a mice nest and about a 1000 mice turds...nice to know I had been breathing this for a couple of months

......that little ball of lint you found is a mouse nest....

After reading these posts I decided to check mine truck seeing as we spent last summer in CT where the truck was parked outside. Sure as hell, the filter was full of crap along with a mice nest and about a 1000 mice turds...nice to know I had been breathing this for a couple of months

Thanks for the heads up. Guess I'll be checking this WAY more often.

its amazing how quickly those filters can dirty up. It is probably not a bad idea if you folks make a habit of checking the filter every 6 months or so for optimum HVAC performance, no matter what type of climate you live in, perhaps??? eh??

Go to an outdoor, hunting or farm supply store. Buy a $4 little bottle of coyote urine. Put a few drops here and there under the hood. I hit the wire looms a bit as well. Do Not put it on the air filter or anywhere in the air ducts or you will have to get used to coyote urine. I apply it about twice a year, it keeps the mice away.

 

The K&N Durable cabin filter is a great investment. It takes about ten minutes to install it the first time. Once you have cleaned it a time or two, you can get it out in two minutes flat.

Another trick I have read is to use scented dryer sheets under the hood. They can be zip tied in place and rats/mice despise the smell and won't get near. I'm lucky my cabin filter did not look anywhere near as bad as some I have seen on this forum when I changed it.

I know someone that used the dryer sheets in his MH. The mice used them to make a nest :)

Wallmart sells stainless steel scrubby pads (for pots'n pan's). When I put my motorsickle away for the winter (shed behind the house) I shoved Wallyworld stainless steel pads into the exhaust pipes to keep the mice out. Same stuff might work under the hood of our trucks??

    • The timing marks are ok, that is #1, you can turn it over until they line up and it won't change anything, the crankshaft turns twice for every camshaft revolution, I have always set up SB Chevs as your pic shows using a straight edge
    • Someone's been here before.... There is a receipt for a 3-piece timing set, purchased earlier this year.   Is this picture something, or, nothing?   I have the timing cover off and my crank is perfectly TDC and the keyed gear's locating mark is dead on 12 o'clock.   The cam gear locating mark is also at 12 o'clock. Now, I'm not an expert, but all the install guides say the two locating marks should meet and be perfectly aligned when installing a timing set. The mark on the crank should be dead on 12:00 and the cam gear's mark should be dead on 6:00, and both marks should be perfectly vertically aligned.   I believe the timing gear is keyed or has a dowel that ensures it can only be installed on the cam in one position, so I have to believe the cam is out of phase somehow. At the very least, with a triangular bolt pattern, it can only be installed in one of 3 different positions.   Before I pulled the front cover, the truck was running alright, no service engine soon lights except an occasional P0172 / rich condition. Timing -16 timing at idle (should be +16), and total -35% fuel trim, two conditions I haven't been able to figure out.   In related news, my injector tested pretty well, wasn't leaking, but I had it rebuilt anyway, and it's on it's way back to me.         Along with this discovery, the good and bad:   Good: The oil pan seal appears undamaged.   Bad: -The timing cover has been reused, and the positioning dowels have been broken. That could explain some of the leaking. -Some kind of white paste or grease was used to try to seal the oil pan seal and timing cover (since wiped off..). -Then, someone globbed silicone all over the front of the cover and also buried the ckp sensor in it. But, they didn't put any inside the cover or use RTV to try to seal the oil pan seal with the timing cover (good).
    • The guy that owns K&P filters last I checked in with him has over 300,000 miles on his Dodge base Hemi using his own 35 micron absolute stainless mesh filter from its first oil change.    The GM study I've posted a dozen times shows the relationship in engine life based in multiples of base units, not miles or years. That is the base unit is the number of miles the motor ran using the reference filter efficiency.    The above two paragraphs dismantle anecdotal arguments IF one changes oil often enough to prevent particle formation and the motor is in otherwise good shape. That is not full of silica (no air filter) or suffering a metallurgical issue that is not part of the lubrication discussion. Poor heat treat in example.   Data from UOA's I've reviewed from more than a few engines can show remarkably broad variations in oil cleanliness using the exact same filter over the course of an engines life.     Lastly there is the common sense of it. Wear debris WILL circulate the engine BEFORE it ever sees a filter in route to that filter and WILL harm the pump which NEVER sees filtered oil.    Alpha question then becomes, given the facts, how long do you believe is a reasonable service life from a vehicle you are certain you will not pass down? That is the junk yard will be it's resting place when you're done with it? (the moral issue most don't care about).    Omega question is then how diligent are you prepared to be in general mechanical, air & oil maintenance? Preventing particulates and keeping them sufficiently dilute; preventing the precursors from generation, amalgamation and precipitation.    If I get a good look at the engine bay of a vehicle I have a fair idea of the owners commitment to the inside of the power train. That 30 micron WIX is still more efficient than a sieve.                 
    • It also depends on what criteria someone is using for “best” when talking filters.  Are we going off best efficiency?   Best quality/QC?  Etc. because the two may not mutually exclusive.
