I'm so fed up with GM's "service" and I'm not sure

Try more like a $10 - $15K hit on that truck. Think I noticed about some American's is that they run their debt up like crazy. I bought a boat off a couple in Pennsylvania many years ago. They owned two 5th wheel RV's, 3 pickup trucks, one SUV, two cars, 3 dirt bikes, a couple quads and they had 100 acres of land. I asked what they did for a living and they both worked at a butcher shop. How does a butcher shop pay out that much money? It doesn't......

Depends on the type of butcher shop they work at, if you get what I'm sayn..

Mind you I'm now dealing with an executive case manager on this issue.

I just received a call back saying that the case manager talked with the dealership that did the testing and that they are denying that they even did any testing.

So I went ahead and forwarded the email from the DEALERSHIPS BODY SHOP MANAGER himself, with the photo's attached back to the case manager, along with this message. (Names withheld)

(Representative)-

In this email thread you can see that the photo's that are attached were emailed from (person with email address from Dealership B), to (the assistant body shop manager), who then forwarded them to me. These photo's undeniably were taken of my vehicle, while it was at their dealership (which can easily be proven by looking at the flooring and reflections in the paint itself), and shows the tape that was used as well as the paint on the backside of the tape when it was removed. For anyone at (Dealership B) to deny doing said test, while I am in possession of this email from them with these photos, is so far beyond just lying, that it borders on fraud and slander.

I should also point out that I'm learning more about the in-fighting between these dealerships and their zone warranty representatives. From (Dealership B) recent allegation that they did not do these test, it's quite obvious that they are trying to backpedal to get themselves out of liability. From the service bulletin PIT5313C they (nor myself) could see where this was warranty limited. The bulletin actually points out that these repairs supersede the warranty. They know they did the tests, but since they didn't check with their warranty representative first, they realize that they are now on the hook for damaging my truck by removing paint with the tape test. The zone representative realizes that he has no vested interest because my truck wasn't misdiagnosed in his zone to begin with, and he doesn’t want another claim showing up in his zone, so he's happy pushing this back on (Dealership B). In talking with the body shop manager at (Dealership A), who miss-diagnosed this to begin with (I have the paper work showing it went to (Dealership A) while under warranty for a paint chipping issue), (Dealership A) also realizes that(Dealership B) is on the hook because they performed the testing.

Regardless as to whatever in-fighting is happening behind the scenes, I as a consumer and definitely getting left out in the cold. With all of the documentation I have, at a minimum I have a slam dunk small claims case against (Dealership B) for damaging my vehicle. But because this whole case came about because of an admitted factory defect (the PIT describes a specific manufacturing plant, in a specific time line, and that a change in the factory process was initiated to fix this issue) I feel that GM should step up to the plate and issue the go ahead to get this fixed. I also believe that it would be extremely easy to find an expert witness to look over my paint, look at the service bulletin, and make the case that regardless of current warranty, a factory defect had in fact occurred.

I have been extremely understanding and patient in this case, but it seems that everyone from the GM side has been increasingly adamant in denying any wrongdoing. I do look forward in hearing from you and hope that we can come to an amicable conclusion in fixing this issue.

The representative did mention that this case is being escalated once again and that the photo's will be forwarded to a technician for review.

It's pretty bad right now. I don't know what the deal is. I'm having issues as well. Very upsetting.

I just has the first service done on mine.

I took almost 2 and half liters of oil out just to get it back down to the full line on the stick.

They also sent me home with a couple of finger tight lug nuts.

They also inflated my 22 to 40PSI. It was like driving home on balloons.

They are all over me now to bring it back in even though I corrected everything.

I think they just want to look at it so they can invent an excuse.

Its important to remember that GM really has no control over dealerships and what they do. GM made that crystal clear to me early on when dealing with transmission issues. They can't even make a dealership do warranty work, they can only ask a dealership to help resolve any complaint you bring into them. Which in my opinion means the manufacturer's warranty is only as good as any dealership around you is willing to service under it. Sure, GM can take away their ability to sell their brand, but that's not done often since the manufacturer wants to sell as many vehicles as possible, post-sell issues be damned.

TERRIBLE business model!

But on that, GM pays these service centers. If the customer complains and says they do crap work GM should hit them in their wallets. I would think this would get their attention pretty quick!

Terrible business model? Perhaps, but it's the norm now in the automotive industry and there isn't anything you can do about it. Because the next manufacturer you go to probably plays the same game. What a shame.

Apparently the surveys do have an effect on the dealers. Somehow their pay is linked to the completely satisfied option. When they scratched my steering wheel, and made me do 2 more trips to the dealer to fix it, I did not select completely satisfied. I did the same thing for the seat belt recall because it now rattles. Now, when I went to schedule an appointment for the airbag recall/reprogram, they would prefer I find another dealer. I guess you are just supposed to be happy you get a vehicle back at all. What I find strange when I stated I would not recommend Chevrolet at all on the survey, it received no reaction at all from GM.

It's as if the folks that have issues or problems get pushed aside because these dealerships have too much other business. A normal person who doesn't run a company finds this behavior just plain crazy. There has to be some kind of accountability somewhere. Service centers these days basically try to make people with problems just go away. Is this what GM wants?

I cannot comment on GM's business model. I believe it is far more complex than most of us can fathom. In the past I have had success with their multi-level appeal process, The OP did well by having his paint issue documented while under warranty. (Any time I have a concern about a machine under warranty, I make sure I have confirmation from the manufacturer that this concern has been reported.) Unless we're missing some pertinent information I believe the OP will have this issue resolved in his favor! It must be a significant cost to repair to justify all of this hoop jumping!

I hope it gets solved too. But the amount of runaround I'm getting, I don't suspect they'll be doing anything. I heard back a few days ago from the representative who mentioned she was working to see if she could get some sort of partial compensation to get it fixed.

I'll wait for the next call, then I'm lawyering up.

What is the fix? Does the entire truck have to be stripped and repainted or what?

Today's update:

GM had me go out and get a quote for the work that would be required to fix the issue. I went out and got a quote to strip down the 4 doors and bed area and get them refinished. The quote I got was $3700. I emailed the quote to the case manager and waited.

Today I got a call from Dealership B saying they were calling on behalf of GM Customer Service. They said they put together their own quote from the warranty information and they came out to $2700. GM was willing to pay 60% of this. So that would leave me on the hook for a little over $1000.

What was the point of me getting a quote if they were just going to get a second one based on the warranty info anyways? Where'd this 60% number come from? Who knows.

I haven't accepted the offer. I've got an appointment with a lawyer first.

    • Late reply, but yes—it works on the SLT trim. Compatibility comes down to the plastic shroud shape behind your mirror, not the trim badge itself. On the SLT with auto-dimming, it uses a plug-and-play Y-harness off the mirror/rain sensor power, so no need to run wires down to the OBD port. If anyone's ever unsure about fitment, just drop a photo of your mirror housing and we can double-check it.   Appreciate the detailed feedback on the install! On the windshield glare—we actually took feedback like yours and developed a dedicated CPL (polarizer) filter to cut down dash reflections on sunny days. If you're still running the cam, shoot me a DM. I'd be happy to send a CPL filter over for you to test out—no charge.
    • There are no stickers in your glovebox?
    • Look at the numbers on the stickers in the door jam...
    • Yes, every time the developer updates his code, you must recompile. I will private message you with the latest because it changes pretty much with every version.
    • After I wrote that reply I went for a ride. 85 F out. So trans started at 85 F and it shifted the same as it did an hour latter at 168 F. I've never actually recorded the to cold to shift point but it is under 32 F before they start hanging on to a lower gear or leaving the converter unlocked. Both intended to heat fluid.    Yes, brake or bake. Absolutely.      Your welcome. True research ended decades ago. Field trials are still in play.    There is a thing called oxidation onset temperature. This is the heat related oxidation not the O2 exposure kind. For mineral oil that starts at 140 F. So what happens after 140 F? Each 20 F cuts fluid life in half! Does using a Full Synthetic improve that? Yes! By how much? Depends on the base oil type and a few other factors. But enough to notice. Some esters are even higher. There are even synergies between types the will raise it higher than any one component is alone.    Then there is "Hindered" oils. Antioxidant additives. Hindered Polyol Esters can sit at 500 F for years in a turbine.   When a blender brags his oil will 'take 500 F" in service he doesn't specify for how long. Water will dance on a 500 F hot plate for several seconds. @newdude put up a chart showing the relationship between fluid temperature and it's life in an automatic transmission. Here's a version of that chart for Group III based oils. These temperatures are those in the pan as observed as 'normal'. that is you drive as you do for as long as you do under what load you ask of it and whatever that temperature is this graph applies to. Flash temperatures of a few minutes isn't what his means.    Note that fluids held at a constant 240 F have a service life of only 20K miles. 220 F explains the factory exchange limit, eh? My equipment I keep under 180 F and I'm good if the cooler will hold it as low as 140 F. But that's me.
