New Member - Need Help

Hello everyone. I am new here, and have never really needed to use a message board before. I wanted to post as a new member before putting this in another topic area. Sorry if I should put it somewhere else, just wanted to introduce myself at the same time.

I haven't really had any major problems with any of my GM/Chevy trucks before, but now I have a major issue and am looking for guidance. I have a 2013 Silverado, 5.3 V8 with 21,000 miles.

Recently, I have been hearing a "whining" noise (best way I can describe it) sometimes with a VERY slight grinding noise coming from what sounds like behind the RPM gauge. It takes a minute or two after driving it for it to start, and seems to get louder as I drive (my work commute is only 15-20 minutes). The truck can also be in park, engine on, and makes NO noise - but- if I hit the gas while in park, as the RPMs go up, so does this whining noise.

As I lift the hood, it sounds like the noise is coming from somewhere on the drivers side of the motor/engine compartment, but I cant really place exactly where its coming from. It's frustrating..... Now, here is the problem.

Took it to the dealership.....they said it is the steering gear going bad and leaking. Cost to fix? $1400 because its not covered in the warranty. How can a steering gear going bad make this noise while in park? Does this sound right to any of you? I admit, I have no experience with steering gears (boxes) and have never had this issue before. But $1400? That's a hard pill to swallow.

Any thoughts? Does this sound like it could be a steering gear issue to any of you? Thanks in advance.....
