Recovery Hooks and Strap

I am looking to purchase a recovery strap for my truck. The general recommendation is to have a strap rated at 3-4 times the weight of the vehicle, which is 17-22k lbs for a full size crew cab truck. Would the following strap be ok for our size trucks?

ARB recommends it for smaller SUVS and trucks like a Tacoma. I plan to only have it for emergency pulling my truck out when stuck, not full recovery in off-road situations. Any advice would be appreciated.

 

Also, is it best to get a strap (e.g. tree saver) so that you can use both recovery hooks on the front of the truck? Does GM rate the recovery hooks on the front?

If you don't plan to use it in full on offroad recovery needs then you should be fine.

 

You should also be fine just using 1 hook. I strapped to my bull bar when I went camping last year and was able to be pulled just fine.

Where are the correct places to hook these on our trucks? Is this something the owners manual would specify?

I bought an avs recovery strap. I think is the name 24k pound. 100$ and it's worth it.

I have used Snatch M Straps since the 70's and they do work. I still carry one around in my pickup. It's about 35 years old and still works fine. One thing I highly recommend you never do is buy one with metal hooks or anything else metal on it. If the strap breaks, that metal item becomes a bullet and will do miraculous damage to your truck and yourself.

I have pulled my Well Drilling rigs out with a 1/2 ton pickup using a strap. Just get a ten foot or so running start and Pow Boing, the

Rig comes right out.

Have had really good luck with Bubba Rope products, have one in my Jeep and full size. They have a lot of different options depending on the application.

I did that once...hit it hard and it just snatched me right.back to where I started...kind of a cool feeling..

 

I have a ProComp treesaver and a ProComp 3"×30ft, had them both for a long time. They last a long time as long as you keep them clean and free of mud that cuts the fibers. I got both of mine on sale at Summit Racing.

I have a 30K lb 4" wide strap. As for a receiver hook, I made my own from Tractor Supply. Took a receiver that took a 1 1/2 inch shank hitch ball and got the biggest D-ring they had which was a 1" pin. To take up that slack I bot a sleeve bushing that goes between the pin and receiver shank hole. I believe the d-ring is also rated at around 30K, but can't remember. I also have about 6 d-rings of different sizes. You'll never have too much crap because one day you'll need it.

I did that once...hit it hard and it just snatched me right.back to where I started...kind of a cool feeling..

 

That happens until you get enough slack in the strap and hit it hard. It's kind of like slow motion. The pulling truck kind of stops, then rolls forward as the unit being pulled smoothly comes loose. I tried to pull a guy our of a lake years ago, who just drove out there about 30' from shore and sat there until his tires slowly sunk into the sand. I couldn't reach him with my strap so he gave me an old chain. When the chain broke it left a real nasty imprint of a curvy chain on my tail gate.

I have pulled things out several times using my hitch ball and no hook. I just wrap the end of the tow strap around underneath the ball and cross it in front. Then it can't fall off.

One thing I will mention is storage...a tow strap can be rolled flat (firehose style) for compact storage...
