Custom Borla Exhaust Install

So I have been trying to decide on what route I want to go for my exhaust system for my 2014 Silverado 5.3. I was considering the GMPP Borla Exhaust, but I heard that the total volume of the sound does not really increase, just the tone does. I'm not willing to spend $1,200+ for the same volume, so I have been looking at having a shop do a custom install. I have a few questions about that though. I was planning on getting a Borla Atak or S-type muffler with single in/dual out and having a dual rear exit.

My questions are:

1. Because the exhaust flapper is located behind the muffler, my shop said they can attach it to one of the exit pipes, but obviously not both. Is it possible to buy a flapper or do some shops have these? Will one fix the drone for only that specific tail pipe or both? (I respect everyone's opinions, but I'm not willing to entertain any possibility of drone so I want the flappers in place.)

2. Does anyone know if Borla will sell me just that individual muffler they usually sell with the whole kit for the Silverados or do I need to get one of the general ones they sell?

3. Has anyone else done something similar and have any input on this situation?

Thanks

The Borla GM exhaust has the flapper in front of the muffler, so that is an option too.

Move the flapper in front of the muffler. I believe on my 14 the flapper was before the muffler.

So having the flapper in front of the muffler will have the same effect as having it behind? If so, that is the exact solution I have been looking for

IMO... exhaust are a science and the manufacturers that make them have the knowledge as to what works.

Borla designed the GM Exhaust with a valve -- I have had this one and no crappy sound in V4 mode

Borla didn't design other exhaust with a valve

Corsa doesn't have a valve

Magnaflow doesn't have a valve -- I have had this one no crappy sound in V4 mode

Flowmaster doesn't have a valve

Can't speak to the others, also have had Walker and Dynomax with valve cutout, had crap sound in V4 with the Dynomax none with the Walker but that was a huge muffler.

My 14 was in front, I did a muffler delete and later an after market muffler. Sorry to say I had the dreaded V4 sound with both. I went with a hand held and turn the V4 off. I did the whole loud exhaust thing on everything till I turned 60, even my costume truck has two sets of mufflers now. Never though it would happen.

Get the GMPP Borla, order online at shopchevy.com and install yourself for about $950. This system was designed for your truck, no drone and sounds great. Built by a manufacturer that knows exhaust. You won't rattle windows in the house at the end of the block but anyone who tells you it is the same volume as stock has never ridden in a truck with this exhaust (and maybe a MIT to go with it). Just do it........quit thinking about it.

Are you set on a 1 in 2 out muffler? You could run a single in/out muffler with the valve after, then add a Y after the valve.

I decided to save my money and I'm going to start shopping around for my next truck. Thanks for the input though!

Not a bad plan, why though? Going 4wd?

Yeah I would like a 4wd and a 6.2L as well. Also would like to get a black truck instead of white, only got the white because of the deal I got on the truck

I have the Borla sport and currently run AFM. Frankly, I don't know what all the fuss is about relative to the V4 sound. I do hear a change in the sound coming from the exhaust but V4 mode rarely lasts for more than a few seconds and although there is a change in tone I really don't consider it annoying. My opinion is to forget the "flapper" altogether.

Smart move man, the 6.2 is an absolute beast. I love it. Those Auto 4wd launches are a lot of fun, and surprises the hell out of people haha.

    • Did you ever get this worked out? Mike is doing the two start thing now too. This is after a new camera back in December.
    • I’m doing an experiment on a vehicle I don’t have much money in. I’m going by the premise that after they last 100K miles they were no mechanical problems with assembly. Or defects with the parts. With oil changes by the minder for the first 127K miles when I acquired it. I quickly went through low mileage oil changes then settled on 5k oil changes with close to 170K miles on the vehicle currently. I did have the option to turn off the cylinder deactivation. I didn’t on this vehicle because it’s in ECONOMY mode at least half the time. It should be a no brainer frequent oil changes are the key. The manufacturer gets away with the long oil changes with its severe service  maintenance. Just ask them what is normal.
    • Even set to "recirculated", the air pushes out and is hot. I have noticed that sometime it doesn't want to switch between recirculated/vented air. Say it is set to Circulated Air and I want to switch to Vented, when I click the Vented button, it just quickly lights up/clicks and immediatly switches back to Circulated. It's done this a few times now. So maybe it is an actuator getting stuck? But then, that doesn't explain the hot air when everything is off does it?
    • I wonder what the price is out at the coast, Big Sur or other out of the way locations as I bet they are charging quite a premium over the in land pumps.
    • Were you looking at the HD trucks on the GM website or the half tons as that makes all the difference. As far as I know there are only two options for the HD trucks and that is the standard 2 speed transfer case or the 2 speed transfer case that has the added 4 high auto feature and they put that transfer case by default into the LTZ and High Country although its optional in the LT and not sure if its available in the work trucks.    The half tons, that is where its been a total mess in my estimation for a few years now with most trucks below the top trim having the single speed transfer case as standard but with the option of having the two speed such as one would get by choosing the Z71 package, however then not being able to get the two speed transfer case with the towing package unless it was a higher trim truck AND had the 6.2 gas so one could combine the towing package gearing diffs with the two speed transfer case. Having said that if its a trail boss package then it gets the two speed transfer case but not necessarily able to get the tow package as it would depend on trim level and engine chosen. Believe me, people have bought the GM half tons assuming "of course it will have a two speed transfer case" only to find out after when they really pay attention to what they now own .... crap, there is NO low range !.    I don't believe Ford or Ram have gone that way yet with their half tons but like I say its been a few years now that GM has done this with the half tons.
