When Does Battery Need Replaced According to CCA

Hello all, i took my 2006 silverado to get an oil change at the dealer the other day. When done they informed me my battery CCA was below their standard. My battery is a 660 CCA and they informed me my battery tested at 488 CCA.

 

So not knowing about CCA does my battery need replaced? I have in the past let batteries go until no more cranking when younger. now i am older and rather not be stranded if possible.

 

Truck seems to turn over fine. What say the crowd here.

 

Thanks for input. If suggested to replace should i go with delco, motorola, optima or what for a good battery.

You failed to tell us what temperature the battery was when tested. I would tell them to warranty it was not below 0 F.

If you are worried about it, just replace it.

I would keep an eye on it, if it starts to sound more strained when cranking each week, you may not have long.

 

I replaced my battery about a year and a half ago, I went with an O'Reilly platinum AGM (775CCA). The AGM are supposed to withstand vibration, it's a simple but cool technology. They cost much more, but are made by Deka in the US and are warranteed 3 yrs. We'll see how it holds up.

If it's the OEM battery I would run it until it gives you problems. Average life expectancy of a battery is 7 years but some last 15 and some die the first year. CCA ( Cold Cranking Amperes ) is a term often used and sometimes misleading. Batteries with higher CCA tend not to last as long as lower because the plates inside have to be thinner, the thinner the plate the more chances it will warp under severe use even with more spacers. If you have an ACDelco in your truck now and it lasted this long, when it goes I would replace it by one of the same or a cheaper one if you're not going to keep the truck. The dealer would have loved to sell you an overpriced battery and labour to change it. lol

take the truck to a parts house of your choice and have it tested, if it fails again and you don't want to be left stranded replace it. I bought and carry one of these handy boosters, we have them at work and they are awesome.

I have two Hyundais bought at the same place, one is 51/2 years old and one 11/2 years old. Every time I take the older one in I ask they say it's good. Much too my surprise the new one this last oil change they said it tested bad and replaced it for free. It seemed fine too me. They could have waited till next oil change and started pro rating it. That's why I always buy from them.

***Below their standards*** sounds suspect to me because they love selling you extras when your truck/car is there being serviced for something else. You could always take it to a parts supplier and have a 5 minute load test done on it for a 2nd opinion. If your battery is not too old and never had any cranking issues I wouldn't really sweat it. But, if you're 1 of those customers who lives by your dealers service tech word go ahead and replace it if it makes you feel more comfortable.

that is why i took battery to local parts house. they tried to test and said to charge battery and bring back. They did offer to charge for me. I took home placed on trickle charger. will take back in a day or so and see what happens. started charging at 8 amps. then went down to 3-4 amps within 15 minutes. So observing this i don't think i need a battery. Will take for test anyhow. Besides found negative terminal/cable had some corrosion on it so soaked baking soda/water on it to clean it and rinsed with straight water while battery charging.

 

Took magnifying glass to see 660 CCA. still cant find a year on it. Motorcraft when i bought the truck say 5 years or so ago.

 

So if battery needed what is best in opinions? Delco? Optima? Walmart? NAPA?

I just bought two new ones from NAPA, one for my Silverado and one for the Fiancé's Cobalt. Both were the cheapest I could find besides Wal-Mart, but the ones at Wal-Mart had bad reviews so I decided against them. The one that came out of the Cobalt was an ACDelco that was over 9 years old.

NAPA, Interstate (Available at Costco), and now I throw into the mix, Deka. They have a good reputation and I'll be getting me 2 of the 700+ CCA Deka's for my Duramax when the 2 500 CCA battieries that the moron previous owner had put in crap out. http://www.dekabatteries.com/

I found that batteries that tested weak were fine for years EXCEPT when stressed , like you use the radio for more than 1 hour or more with the truck not running ... or if you let the truck set upstarted for a few weeks or more. Seems daily driving charges the battery and it will be fine until stressed, which usually doesn't happen under normal continuous daily use. Anything that stress's it can leave you stranded (like an accidental drain from your power point charging something over night) - your choice

Have had good luck with the napa ones, 800 CCA and had one came wit truck not sure how old it was it lasted 5 years .
