1K mile OCI About 12 ounces of makeup oil 😎

5 Quarts Mobil 1 5W40 Euro Spec

Fram filter

NGK Iridium plugs

Fram Air Filter.

Has used less each of last 3 changes. Better improvement in last two. I'll stay with the Mobil Euro product for now.

Late addition: Not a single plug was oil fouled nor were they fuel fouled. They did have some ash deposits consistent with Full SAPS oil and some ring leakage. None bridged. Ruthenium is a tough plug. Air filter was ready to be changed. Not past its sell date but ready.

273,000 Mile Service

1K OCI and again only 12 ounces of make up!

Less than a quart in 2,500 miles. So still OEM "fine"

5 Quarts Mobil 1 HM 10W40

No filter change this time.

6 oil changes ago I switched from 5W30 to 5W40. The first change was as horrid as the 5W30 but the next change was a significant reduction and it improved, incrementally then next few changes. Then I switched from Castrol Euro to Mobil 1 Euro. Not planned just the store was our of my usual. Not oil did it reduce consumption once more but at 1K miles, twice in a row now, it is no longer 'inky and stinky'. Oh, it's black in the bottle but on the stick looks pretty darn good.

I'm not switching to Mobil 1 HM for any other cause then CAUSE I had a jug unopened. Be back to the Euro stuff next go.

Fuel economy has dropped while the oil has improved but it is almost all mixed driving now. No changes after changing plugs and filters in that regard. But it has improved the more tanks of Nitro + I feed her. Offset in the fuel meter is dropping like a stone in a well. That's a good thing.

I haven't published one of these in a good long time. This chart is just part of a much longer history. That last high consumption point at the far left is the last use of 5W30 in this motor. The remainder are Euro type 5W40's and the last point, still incomplete as the OCI is still in progress, 10W40 HM. It is a long way from right but it has moved from a quart in a thousand or more to between 2500 and 3000 per quart with a slight improvement each OCI. Point #53 is the last tune up.

Current OCI is 750 miles into it and there is no color to the oil which is a MAJOR change in events. As reported earlier it has been measurably improving with each event.

It isn't going to heal itself but this is much more manageable. Back to daily driver but still fairly local. 50 mile limit or so.

Not terrible consumption for anything given the mileage. My Accord at 300k was using a lot more but I never went beyond 10w30 to try to reduce it either. It was time to take it behind the woodshed for other reasons anyway.

This one is getting there. Rust starting in ugly places and the transmission is hinting she's tired.

Funny that recently it has dipped below the GM threshold for relief if it were still under warranty. They got themselves plenty of warranty shade. It's a ridiculous number the public is good with though. She's been a first class school room.

Want to hear something funny? P420 codes are not yet obnoxious! Full SAPS oils for this long and the CATS are just hinting 95% efficiency and O2's are still working? There's a lesson in the lie of SAPS.  A claim made the evidence does not support made without a means to test its validity. Just a guess. A theoretical guess.

They call me crazy but the claim is harder to make on the data. 😉

I had two that used a qt of oil every 2500 miles from new. 94 Z-28 and a 98 ford F-150. The Z-28 I bought with 10K miles on it. There was documentation on it from new. My 94 Impala didn’t and the 4.6 wasn’t my only one. The others didn’t. The Ford had an added supercharger at 20K miles with 5LBs of boost. I had the Z-28 seven years. The Ford 3. Both were with me for about 150K. Both dealers said normal. Both dealers l bought multiple vehicles from and said they would back me pass the warranty. The Camaro needed a cat at 100K miles. It was deleted. Both had Amsoil, both had 25K oil changes or one year. Sometimes I skip with the Z-28. Just went with miles. The truck was a stick. I did nothing service wise with the transmission except as early Amsoil change. I still did my own service at that time. How dare those people steer me so wrong! Just think how long I could have gone! Nope I was done with them. The served me well with no problems. They drove away like new.

Why not run straight RL straight racing SAE 50 and enjoy no oil consumed  at all?

Rust and boredom are my limiting factors on length of ownership. I avoid the rust by either buying new or “importing” used from southern states. Boredom I can’t avoid. Once there’s nothing left to repair or modify the clock is ticking.

But hey, at least the cars I trade or sell are in better condition than when I got them and sometimes better than new. If they go to someone who wants or needs it to last forever, I feel good about their chances. Lots of satisfaction in that.

Somehow I still managed to get something every two years. New work truck until I retired. And whatever classic I was playing with. Lately it’s been either going to family members at a discount after I’ve made improvements. Or I find something for a deal and let them pay me for them over time. My last hotrod the 92 Chevy truck selling it paid for the Avalanche. Then I found a Ridgeline and let my grandson have the Avalanche to use. I haven’t decided if I want to permanently let it go. I had a little more anxiety letting it go. Maybe if he tears it up that will be the decider. A couple were new vehicles that we later passed. I don’t think that’s going to happen with the wife’s car this time. Unless I find an identical low mileage twin. I’m looking for nothing in particular. I have a couple that could unseat the odyssey. Something along the line of a Caddie V or a Chevy ss or sporty midsize Acura or Lexus. My wife can’t drive the truck so it would have to be something she could drive if the Genesis was in for repairs. There’s a narrow box Im willing to spend. So maybe a civic si or Jetta gli. That could change tomorrow. It’s has to be cheap so if don’t like it. I hand it off.
