1,458 mile OCI

23 ounces make up.

10 of that in the last 371 miles.

13 for the first 1087 miles.

5 Quarts Mobil 1 15W50

1 Supertech ST9018 filter

Supertech? That ain't made by Purolator!  🤔😀

No, it isn't. It's also long past the 'preventative' play. 😉

2,035 mile OCI

31 oz of makeup, quart in 2,100

Make up oil is Red Line HP 10W40 about 10 years old. Put it to good use.

A very similar HTHS.

Pulled a sample.

4.75-quarts Mobil 1 FS 15W50

1 Supertech ST9018 filter

The pattern for tens of thousands of miles has been to use little for the first thousand then plummet after that to a point it became intolerable, and I'd pull the plug when the average was approximately a quart in 2K +/- a couple hundred. In multiples of 250 miles.

This time it gained over the entire interval, and I quit when a quart was consumed. That doesn't mean there wasn't some variation. There was, but I added on a mark instead of a mile and that equaled the curve below. It went a period late in the change where is used next to nothing then a good bit, just before the change but the amount used over the entire segment wound up being the same.

I left the level a bit low this time and am using the marks I put on the stick a few years ago that allowed me to check on slopes accurately. The book says the capacity is a 'nominal' or is 'approximately" 5 quarts. I find it, on the level to be about 1/4 quart less. Varies a bit with the length of drain. But not 5.

1,507 mile OCI

15 ounce of makeup or 9.95 ounces per thousand or roughly a quart in 3,200 miles. 35% lower that last 15W50. 50% lower overall from worst. Four consecutive declines.

Last fill up on bottle of AMSOIL PI.

4.66 quarts Mobil 1 FS 15W50 (4 quarts and 21 ounces to the full mark. This seems to vary)

1 Purolator L15436 filter. Not liking the look of the Supertech when I pull them.

No results on last OCI UOA yet. My issue, not theirs.

GDI-HPFP is a solid bet.  About how long the first one lasted.

1,000 OCI on 6.5 ounces of makeup oil. Is it using less or is the gasoline in the oil replacing volume 🤔 Add back 3.5% of 5 quarts and it about the same as last time but still less than the one before that. All three 15W50.

4.8125 quarts Mobil 1 FS 10W40 High Mileage. No filter change this time.

No Mobil 1 15W50 to be found. No Euro 5W40 ANYTHING on the shelf. What I picked or mineral 20W50. Lab said cut the OCI in half. Seems right for the lighter weight. Stuck here until I can get the pump changed. Not right now.

Replaced drivers side H/L bulb.

Picked back broken paint on tailgate and Fluid Filmed it. Ugly but it won't rust 😉

1,000-mile OCI

6 ounces of makeup oil would have been required. I don't need to add to find the mark anymore. Labs running late. I'd hoped to have them back before I needed to do this. Safety first.

5 quarts Mobil 1 FS 15W50 (See note below).

No filter change.

It ran with the about the same makeup as the 10W40 and it is easier to find around here and has enough viscosity to handle 3 to 4% fuels and keep a decent film thickness.

New HPFP and high side fuel tube on order.

This Full SAPS high viscosity oil is doing exactly what I'm asking it to do while I sort this out. Absorbing the fuel dilution and still maintaining enough viscosity and add levels to keep parts apart effectively even at 2K mile OCI's. This second test answered some questions about the injectors and ignition as well. It also confirmed that the 15W40 I used the first time this happened was not getting it done effectively.

184-mile OCI

5 quarts Mobil 1 10W40 HM

1 Purolator L15436 filter

Put a hold on the fuel pump and pipe. New issue to sort out. P0014 “B” Camshaft Position Timing Over Advanced or System Performance. Likely the phaser. Why do I think that?

1.) I just changed oil twice. It's clean and full and viscosity hasn't been an issue over several thousand miles.

2.) No P0010 code so the timing chain has not 'jumped a tooth.

3.) Quite as a mouse hinting the cam chain and guides are still within range.

4.) No idle or hot start issues. Purrs like a kitten.

5.) Fuel economy has suffered but likely the viscosity but could also be the cam just isn't moving.

5.) Standalone code eliminates the ECU which leaves two possibilities:

       a.) The Phaser

       b.) The wiring

I don't have a bidirectional reader or 'Noid" lights so a simple parts swap should tell me what's up.

VVT solenoids look like an easy job on that motor, and fairly cheap. I’d probably do both while I was at it considering the mileage. Hopefully all it is.

Boy was it hot today. 98F and 113 F heat index.

Went over to Allen Brown Chevrolet for an exhaust phaser. OUCH!! Bought it anyway. In no mood to wait.

Total job time about 20 minutes. 19 of them getting the connector to release.

Started like it always does minus the morning rattle. 🤔 I had thought that a loose heat shield I could never find but seems it was the solenoid. Who knew? :dunno: Anyway I thought it was quite before. Much more so now.

Reset the P0014 code and backed out of the drive only to find it would not go into drive.  Whack O Mole.

Or should I say Whack a Squirrel? Seems I had a visitor overnight that deposited an unhusked walnut into the shift linkage preventing full throw. And....off we went on a test drive. :rollin:

Marked improvement in drivability, shift quality and fuel consumption. I wonder how far these need to be off command to throw a code? Must be a mile.

Haven't done the postmortem yet. I'll check back in on that, but the screen was SPOTLESS.

I read somewhere you can check their resistance with a multimeter. If it looked decent maybe it was an electrical failure that finally did it in. Sounds like it was on it’s way out for awhile though. Alls well that ends well. Now back to the fuel pump lol…

Yes, it should be 5 to 8 ohms. If it's open we know. If it is in spec to the lathe with it. 🤨

7,109 miles on these new tires. Road Force Balance and rotate. All four needed a correction.

Still can't find the slow leak. Wear looks very good. VERY good. 😱 Now back on 5K rotations and 10K balancing. Even numbers oil changes.

816 miles this OCI (getting back on even numbers while I do other services. Yes OCD)

3 ounces of makeup oil. A bit less each chance. Means nothing as long as the fuel pump is leaking into the crankcase.

5 quarts Mobil 1 10W40 High Mileage and no filter change. Did change the demister pad.

Be a bit longer getting the new fuel pump.
