Tint Question

I am looking to tint the front two windows on my GMC Sierra, and received this as a response from a reputable tint shop - The back 2 doors and back glass are generally just dyed glass on those trucks. In their current state, all they offer is privacy - no heat or UV rejection that you gain with actual tint. We can do just the front 2 windows for $79 .

 

I have never heard this before, is this true?

No clue - but consider not going too dark - I went 35% on the front side windows and 15 or 20 on the back window.

 

Proved to be way too dark on the fronts - would have to roll down the windows to turn in the dark - for fear of running over a pedestrian. And the rear tint over the defrost grid made for an odd distracting reflection,,,,,,,,,, Have a new rig on order - and will leave the factory tint as is. Have a 2015 Outback and left it as is.......

 

We had a 2010 MINI tinted twice before a shop got it right - afterwards the windows always squeaked rolling up and down - Just say no to tint................

Not sure about the factory tint not providing any UV protection, but seems to me that any darkness of the window would provide some heat protection at least.

 

Anyway, I had 20% put on my front 2, same as I have with about every vehicle I've owned. Matches the factory tint in the back. Technically it's illegal where I live. Legal limit is 35% on front 2 windows, but I've never had a problem on the last 10 or so vehicles I've owned.

 

Just got my wife a new Acadia, and feels weird driving it with no tint yet. That will be going in soon to get the same thing done.

I'm not too sure about no UV protection either. But I recommend matching the rear windows. I feel that anything lighter isn't really worth it.

Factory glass whether tinted or no has UV protection. Un-tinted glass usually has 95-99% light transmittance and has some heat rejection. Factory tinted glass is generally 35-45% the actual % will be present on the small label found on the bottom corner.

 

Their trying to sell you. Adding a layer of film to the already factory tinted windows will provide will provide "more" protection and heat rejection, but usually isn't necessary

I've always heard this as well. I would think the dye in the glass would help a little, but they're right in saying that it won't have the heat reflective properties of actual tint. I've always tinted all the windows on my vehicles (except the windshield). Some people even put a clear film on the windshield solely for the heat reflection.

It's funny how people can have such different experiences & opinions on the same topic. My last two trucks had 5% on every window (except the windshield) and I never had any problems. My mom's car has 35% on the fronts, and I can barely tell it's been tinted, haha. And, on 5 different vehicles, I've never had any problems with the rear defroster or with squeaking when rolling the windows down. It's unfortunate that you've had such bad luck, because window tint really improves the look of a vehicle (in my opinion).

 

To the OP, my suggestion would be to wrap the whole thing in 20%. That's what I just did on my new truck. The only reason I didn't go with 5% again is because it was a bit difficult to see my camper in the mirrors when towing at night.

I put 5% on my rear windows and 15%on my two fronts. done that on my last 3 trucks

I've always went beyond the legal limit all around and regretted it at night. This time I had the shop match my fronts to the back two windows, then they did the rear glass a little darker than the rest. Gives an illusion that the tint is darker than it really is. I was/am happy with it and I'm legal, can also see out the windows at night. It's a little tough to see with the back slider open as it's really dark on the side the glass slides to.

I carry things with me that I do not want someone just walking by my vehicles and just look over to see what is in my vehicles, so I always tint my vehicles 20% on all windows other than the windshield, but I have the 6" strip installed on it.

Yes the tint shop is right about your back factory windows sit in driver's seat of your truck on a sunny day then sit in the back the heat you will feel is almost the same heat with just a small minute difference where you do have the darker window in the back.

I went with 5% on all my doors and rear window, only i went with 50% on the windsheild with a 5% Brow. Love it and looks awesome!

Sounds like it may be best just to do the whole truck.

50% tint is not to dark but how dark does the other 5% tint make it look? I currently have my 2016 Silverado regular cab 5% rear window and 25% on the 2 doors and I'm really wanting to go 5% all around with like a 50% or even 35% on the windshield. It would be nice if you can upload a picture from your hood looking in to see how dark it looks. Thanks

i got 35% over the stock tint in the back. I personally dont think its dark enough.

 

Glass does provide some UV protection but does not provide UVA and UVB protection.

 

Also tint provides IR heat protection which glass wont.
