Tire pressure is wrong on my dash ?

Correct, the air pressure change process of setting position does not work, hasn't worked on the GM trucks since the K2xx (2014+) trucks came out. Only way is to use the tool that was posted, take it to the dealer or have a local tire shop recalibrate the positions.

 

Personally for the $50 it cost, I bought the tool and do mine myself.

+1 Also, if you have another newer GM vehicle in the family, the tool will work on it as well.

 

The "air-out" method actually was a rolling change for GM during the 2011 model year. I had an early production 11 Silverado and the air out trick worked, but by the end of that model year production, the tool was required. My son's 12 Cruze needs the tool. I bit the bullet and bought one years ago so I could do it myself as well.

I bought the tool but i like having my own tools. Dont use it often but it comes in handy. I know some older cars you could use a strong magnet but not the newer trucks.

My TPMS were about 5psi off at times. Just recently checked it. DIC says 35 and tire gauge says 30.

Um, yea. The DIC reading I guess is good only to tell me I have a flat "0" PSI. (Of course, I couldn't tell from the road feel, right?).

 

It's not very accurate. And I have two digital gauges that measure in .5 PSI increments that I have confirmed my opinion with.

 

Not a huge deal.

Can they be calibrated? I air down usually once a week to go on the beach and have an air pump with auto stop set to 32 psi. It stops at the same time my DIC hits 32psi.

I believe this was for the previous gen trucks. It does not work on the current gen. You have to have a tool as pictured above or something similar to get it done.

 

Correct. I buy all my tires (4 vehicles and a TT) at Discount Tire. Whenever they install new tires they are supposed to reset the TPM's to match up with their new location. And, they remember to do it maybe 50 ~ 75 percent of the time. The store that I do business at has a special express lane for airing up tires and this sort of stuff so I just swing by, takes about 10 minutes maybe less.

Paid $50 for "the tool" haha

Thanks all! Also did my 2nd oil change. First was at dealership. I'm opting out of the second freebie. The oil filter and the drain plug were "loose" by my standards. I think they were installed slightly more than hand tight. I'm kinda shocked that I didn't lose my oil and my engine. I hope I never have to go to the dealership again

Hmm, I also have a digital gauge thsy measures in 0.5 psi increments. And, it's dead nuts on with my DIC. Only exception being the DIC reading is in whole numbers only. So, there's sometimes a rounding difference between the two.

Wonder why they make you buy a tool? My VW just had an option in the car's settings.

My DIC is also pretty accurate against my gauges. I have a couple of high quality gauges that I use since I own a few motorcycles and psi in those are pretty important. I really don't see the need to "re-learn" each tire. One should be checking their tire pressure a couple of times a month anyway with a gauge (I don't trust what the truck tells me). If your DIC does show one tire is really low then just check all 4 till you find the one that is low.

My father in law has an early built 2011 Silverado (built October 2010) and it needs the tool to reset. I wonder if it depeneded on what plant it was built at.

I don't think each tire is programmed for a corner.

Yes they are. If you look on the DIC you will see two pressures on top, two on bottom. Also, they are lefts and rights. So, LF, RF, LR and RR are all displayed. If at any point someone rotates the tires and the sensors are not relearned to the truck to their new position, then the tire that was the LF and is now on the RR will show the pressure drop on the LF instead of where the tire actually is now on the RR.

Good advice. I will be buying a tire pressure gauge to verify against the DIC. Especially since I will be towing next month. Any recommendations on tire gauge?

I use Motion Pro gauges and prefer analog but I may get a digital down the road. They are pricey but well built, liquid filled, and highly accurate. Will run you about $90.

    • I'm not sure if this should be a new topic, let me know if it's out of place. This my first post. Thanks 85077522 - AC Delco GM Genuine Parts Brake Master Cylinders. Anyone else had to replace this brake master cylinder yet. I didn't do any brake work, it looks like new parts and I've had the truck for about 4k miles, 119k total miles.  When it started to throw codes I did the calibrations with a bidirectional scanner and got the codes to clear but they came back so I did the routine; base bleed, automated bleed and final base bleed. All that with Bosch ES16-32N fluid (please look it up). That seemed to fix it but 100ish miles later it failed again so I ran the same process but with a pressure bleeder this time and got the same results, fixed for 100ish miles. The original fluid looked bad and I thought I got most of it out, it could've been the wrong fluid. The codes; P25A2, C05B0-00, C2A1B. I can get them to clear but not for long. The C05B0 indicates a leak in the front circuit (which is bone dry) so I'm thinking of doing the bleed process on that front again today and I don't know if that's taboo to just do the front but at this point it seems like it's worth the try anyway. The new master cylinder/module unit is supposed to get here today. But now I'm pretty much convinced this install is over my head. I've called several shops and some mobile guys that I know but this thing is like radio active material, scary wise. I did get 2 local shops say they should be able to do it, one says he has the SPS2 programing capability. And with the battery disconnected is there supposed to be pedal resistance, mine is to the floor, then if I pump it I can get some resistance. I had a panic stop prior to this issue which may have contributed from what I read. And on the first attempt to bleed and hydraulic test the scanner listed things to look for and one was any gaps between the pad and rotors which I did notice on the RF corner and I removed the outer pad (where the gap was) cleaned it and the hardware and didn't see a gap after that but will re-check it. I read that if pushing the caliper pistons back then you're supposed to open the bleeder so as to not push fluid backwards into the abs module or it will damage it. If that's true then that's also a possibility from the previous owner having the brakes changed before I got it. I'm using an XTool ip500 scanner. Any suggestions, questions and comments welcome. 
    • Next Friday will be my 6 week point from my right knee replacement.  The surgeon says it will be fine if I choose to drive after this checkup.  I know I could drive now but best to do as my surgeon (and my wife) tell me.  Richard compared being 62 to 72.  I remember when I was in my early 60's I was experiencing slow but regular decline in my mobility.  Thanks to good medical support,  i continued to fight the speed and spread of this decline. During my 60's I worked on non-surgical methods and just when I turned 70, my orthopedic surgeon recommended joint replacements.  In a little over a year, I had one shoulder and both knees replaced.  This hasn't been a terribly fun experience, but worth the discomfort as my future mobility health trajectory has reversed.  It is a treat to now be watching my mobility. balance and confidence steadily improve!
