Dumb Question, License Plate Bolts?

Recommended Posts

OK sorry this is stupid. But I cannot for the life of me find the answer.

I bought some simple black metal plate frames from amazon, and they came with the little caps to cover the plate screws, of course the do not fit. And none of their supplied replacement bolts fit. Too small and wrong thread size.

Where, on Earth, can I find either black bolts/screws for the front and rear plate frames, or some caps that actually fit!?

Thank you

I had the exact same problem, this is what I did.

Just go to home Depot or any hardware store, bring the factory screw with you, also bring the screw cap cover, dig through there hardware bins util you find a screw that will work. Make sure the screw head is small enough to be covered by the cap. As for the threads, just pick something similar or if anything ones with slightly courser threads, it just screws into a plastic retainer, so as long as the threads are a little courser it will dig in.

I agree that the the above response was good but I will add that you will (should) not have to settle for a coarser thread. I recently did the same and easily found the exact screws with smaller heads.

I went to Lowes for new license plate screws. (mine were starting to rust)

They had an automotive bolt section including specifically license plate screws.

Next time buy the "plate frame" from WeatherTech. A bit spendy but excellent quality and comes with several pairs of SS screws good for any application.

i painted my screws

i had to laugh when i bought my truck becuz the dealership used crappy old rusted plate screws... really?? i know the truck was used but i just dropped $40,000+ on a truck and that's the best they could do - jeeze!

i just removed them, gave them a real good sanding to get the rust off, then hit them with 3 or 4 coats of black trim paint - worked like a charm and looked a whole lot better

Oh cool I'll check that one out. If it comes with black screws that work I may buy it still :)
