Why won't my tank fill up?

Admittedly new to the truck game, but I have a '17 Sierra Denali and no matter how much gas I need, it will never fill past 20 gallons. It stops it at the pump and I end up leaving with less than a full tank.

What's the purpose of this and how do I get it to fill up completely?

Have you tried pulling the gas pump nozzle out about an inch and then try to fill? I know if i put the nozzle all the way into the fill tube it clicks sometimes and won't pump gas.

I suspect you still have gas in your tank! Have you tried waiting until you get the low -fuel warning?

The first time and second time I filled my tank it filled completely. This morning it filled about 80%. Needle after filling was just a bit more than 3 quarters of a tank. I am not sure why this happened either. I didn't do anything different. I have a 2017 Denali

Some pumps are super sensitive to the auto-shut-off sensor. Steve nailed it, pull it back out of your fill tube a little bit and then try again.

Also - some gas stations limit the purchase of gas (usually to 30 gallons) but could be to 20 gallons where you live. Something else to ask about if it is filling exactly 20 gallons and leaving you short of full.

20 gallon limit? The only time I ever hit a limit was a few years back when gas was over $4 and the pump shut off at $100.00. I didn't know any places limited it by gallons.

My wife's Malibu does this, but that's because the "full" level on the tank is higher than the intake tube. Which isn't the case on trucks, so my guess is what these guys said.

I would have to agree either the fuel station is limited at 20 gallons or your fuel tank vent is plugged up possibly not allowing the air in the tank to escape causing the nozzle to auto-shut off

Thanks everyone! I've only had the vehicle about 2 weeks and thinking back I've only been to one gas station, I bet they limit it at 20 gallons.

I tried pulling back and filling more and it just wouldn't dispense any more gas. I had no idea gas stations even did this? #ThanksShell

I don't think it is very prevalent in the Midwest, I have never hit a limit in Iowa but I know further West at least they limit the purchase at certain stations.

Are you using a rewards card? Shell has/had a deal with Winn-Dixie for fuel savings at their stations here in Florida. Purchase was limited to 20 gallons.

great thought-Giant here in the NE has the same deal with their proprietary and it's limited to 25 gallons. Luckily my tank is 26 :). filled up for 60 cents a gallon a couple of weeks ago.

My local Food City will limit you to 20 gal if your using their value card and are using what they call fuel bucks, it’s a .15 cent per gallon discount for spending so much with the store.
