Exhaust on a V6...Is it worth it?

Biggest thing with buying my truck was the lack of the V8. I love the rumble and was dissapointed my dealer didn't have that as an option with my colors.

How crappy does the V6 sound with an exhaust on it??

Great question! I do miss the sound at idle of my previous 5.3. I was also wondering if it would be a simple matter of an exhaust upgrade to improve the sound of the V6?

That is not a sound clip of a V6, its a clip of the 5.3 V8 big difference in sound between the 2. IMO the V6 with an exhaust sounds like crap as you can really tell its a V6 with an exhaust.

They do not make an exhaust system for a V6 that is going to sound "good".......In my opinion.

"3 easy steps to make your V6 sound like a V8:

Step 1: Buy a V8.

Step 2: Remove V6.

Step 3: Install V8."

Had to add in the little funny there but in all seriousness there are some after market products that will help make the V6 engines sound like V8's but they will not sound like a V8 throughout all RPM's. The biggest reason the sound is different is the harmonics within the engines and then the next biggest factor is the amount of air flow through the motors.

This is about the best sound that I have heard for the 4.3L. Skip ahead to 1:50

Are there really varying degrees? lol

The excessive noise simply attracts unwanted attention because then people will laugh when they realize they can outrun your truck on foot.

Obviously coming from someone with limited knowledge of modern V-6 engines. Some factory performance V-6 engines sound pretty good. If you really want ( foot race) a V6 how about starting with a 4cylinder and go from there? Putting down someone's ride isn't very nice.

Alright, on a truck this may not work the same, but if it makes you feel any better, I also wanted to hear the rumble on my car. I have a 2004 Grand Am SE1, which has the 3.4 V-6. Since I was lacking the GT dual exhaust, I had a muffler shop fabricate one for me. Used a flowmaster dual outlet muffler (for like a camaro/trans-am), it fits sideways under the trunk and has one outlet on each side.

I also have a CAI. That doesn't affect the sound coming out the rear, but adds a growl under the hood when you step on it.

I'm pretty happy with how my car sounds. But it still doesn't sound like a truck.

I owned an '87 Buick GN, the tires made more noise than the exhaust, go figure?

I did too, and a Z28 at the same time, guess which one was faster?[emoji106]

Not a fan of exhaust on a V6 truck. Too many folks around here slap on Flowmaster or similar and it sounds awful at full throttle. Attracts too much attention and not in a good way.

Now on a Porsche 911 that's another matter entirely.

Not a Flowmaster but a Fabspeed I think it was. Sounded fantastic guy said it ran him about 5K though!

    • Howdy folks,   Recently I pulled a heated steering wheel and clock spring out of a 2015 Sierra All Terrain (part numbers coming soon - will have to disassemble), and just installed it on my 2016 Sierra WT (as base model as it gets).   On install, I noticed that I’m missing the connector often tucked behind the dash for the heating element.     No problem… or so I thought.   I used an “Add-A-Fuse” at my heated steering wheel fuse location, which has voltage, but no wires. I ran it to the positive of the heated steering wheel (Violet/White), and took black to ground.   Hooked up the battery, turned the truck on - no heated steering wheel. No button backlights. Was pleased to see that my cruise control was working though.   Read a post suggesting reversing polarity, so I gave it a shot. Violet and White to ground, Black to power.    Aha! Heat! But I seemingly can’t turn it off AND still no backlights on any of the buttons.    Checked all fuses, everything is still in good order. I’m stumped.   Does anyone have any insight? If so, please share!
    • I'm about 1800 miles into my last oil change, and yesterday a message appeared saying oil life was at 77%. Not sure why it popped up but I think all of these electronics could be susceptible to solar flares or somesuch. I change my oil right at 3K each time, and that was the first time in 10870 miles that message came up. Strange thing is that it showed on the screen at all since I don't drive with that sort of info displayed on the DIC.

    • Checked the pads today and there's plenty of meat on them. If the message keeps coming up, I'll just answer YES that the pads were replaced and wait for the squeal.
